The big problem in roundabouts here is the fact that they cause accidents due to lane switching and people not being used to them.

I got on our local councilor for the city because they could have mitigated this..

When people go for license renewals, the city and province could have had people complete a simple lesson and quiz on these changes and how to deal with them. Instead, they do nothing at all, and I guess let the accidents sort it out.

Yeah as I said people here don't know how to use them properly either but it's just that Americans are not used to them(or Albertans for that matter) - not that they're bad. IMO roundabouts are the best, most efficient way to go. Not to mention actually the safest - when you know what you're doing.

I absolutely love roundabouts or as they call them in Australia/New Zealand "rotaries".  It was fun down there driving them clockwise.

I think the main reason they are safer is the general slower speeds.  I know in Michigan they have been constructing a lot of roundabouts at intersections were there were a lot of incidents.  The number of incidents have only decreased slightly, but the seriousness of the incidents has seemed to come down a lot.

Aren't most major cities in the US run by the Democrats?

No, I don't believe so. Don't all states both red and blue, have major cities/capitals located within each one? Don't most if not all states accept federal grants for infrastructure repair & maintenance? Try as you may, but this is not a red or blue issue, all US states are lacking when it comes to quality of infrastructure. The US could learn a thing or two about infrastructure maintenance and upkeep from our evil socialist neighbors to the north.

Sure, but infrastructure work is coordinated by the local politicians.  It is up to them as to how to spend their money and any money they might get from the state or Feds.  If infrastructure is falling apart, or not being maintained, it is up to the locals to make sure this is fixed.

Yes, that is correct. So how does that equate to a democrat problem? Aren't the politicians in red states just as responsible as the politicians in blue states as to where and how that money is used?

I think its a combined effort.

Take NY freeways for example.. you have states that are major thoroughfares for travel elsewhere. So they toll a lot of their freeways (despite of course being lazy and greedy).

So I think the Federal government should involve itself with funding the fixing of heavily traveled roads. Of course, in proven thoroughfares..

Of course, I guess the question is how much does the Feds cover this, and should they be doing more..

Yes but really in places where people are used to them there's also less accidents. So it's safer in many ways, just gotta get people around here accustomed.

I'm fully convinced that most of the tax money in Canada is spent on stop signs. I've never seen so many, so close together. It's like you just get up to the speed limit and boom, another stop sign.

What's the deal with no major highway going through Vancouver, BC. It always felt weird having to go though neighborhoods to get to downtown Vancouver. Is it like that for other major cities in Canada?

But for a quick pit stop in Vancouver to board a cruise ship headed to Alaska, I've never been to western Canada so I really can't speak for anything in that area. I have been to Quebec and Ontario many times. My wife is the Canadian, she is from Windsor, Ontario.
