I know every time I drive through Toronto I see a mass of orange barrels.  I see they are finally tying the 407 back to the 401 near Whitby/Ajax.

I sure don't appreciate Quebec roads...

The baron farmland in Quebec that sit's north of VT & NH are no different from the back roads in the sparsely populated areas of both those states. The roads take a beaten in the winter time and there isn't enough traffic to warrant constant upkeep, a good amount of those roads aren't even paved. Once you get into the highly populated cities like Montreal and Quebec City, it's completely different. The infrastructure in those cities puts most major US cities to shame, most of Ontario does as well.

Well, considering I do about 40,000 miles a year...including in VT back roads and whatnot, I have to say every time we go up to Quebec, even in the Montreal area(like Hemmingford) I am far far from impressed. I honestly think the roads in VT are better.

Ugh. Major pet peeve of mine when people don't do that even where it's allowed.

I think Canada's roads are better tbh.. but that's merely my experience in border driving in BC<->WA (Blaine/Laurier), BC<->MT (Roosville), AB<->MT (Carway/Sweetgrass), SK<->ND (don't remember where but was north of Minot), MI<->ON (SSM/Sarnia/Windsor POE's), NY<->ON (QL/PB/RB POE's at Niagara region and Landsdowne east of the Lake).

The worst roads I've seen near the borders from where I've driven are Eastern Washington, Western Montana, Northern Michigan (the UP), the Michigan POE near Sarnia, and the US Niagara roads, especially in Buffalo. The one near Ambassador (Detroit) is generally pretty good, and I honestly don't remember the condition East of the Lake.

I will point out that I see an exponential difference in general with upkeep on roads (construction/road work goes).. likely because of the winter factor in Canada and how often roads need to be redone by default. Sometimes though, like in Calgary, it's because Calgary's snow/ice management is dog poo.

I have experienced the opposite in my travels.

Hey to each their own. My wife and I even wonder out loud every time we drive on the roads there what they do with their tax money because it sure doesn't seem to go there *shrugs*. There are some bad roads in both places, but you can't go a day driving here(unless it's winter) without seeing them re-paving something, whereas they seem to do it(just based on condition) much less often up in Quebec. Maybe we take different roads lol. Or maybe you got to experience VT before some of it was fixed, in either case the worst roads I've experienced are in the Milwaukee area lol. And if ya got any extra skin or fat expect it to bounce. ALOT. They all kinda literally look like this:

9235-9415-w-silver-spring-dr-milwaukee-w

(that's silver spring rd which isn't far from where my wife used to live)

I'm fully convinced that most of the tax money in Canada is spent on stop signs. I've never seen so many, so close together. It's like you just get up to the speed limit and boom, another stop sign.

Ontario and BC are a bit ridiculous with their taxes, that's why US border shopping gets so much business. You'd think with such easy access to the US they'd be more sensible, but nah. Higher taxes. Then the Federal Government doubles duty free exemptions.

It's funny that Alberta gets by with no provincial sales tax and has universal healthcare, with very low income taxes as well (until you make like 200k+).With the latest oil issues and the NDP hellbent on increasing spending + skyrocketing minimum wage (during a recession of all times -- no worries because WR and Conservatives merged, NDP stands no chance whatsoever of re-election) its no surprise the province is struggling mightily right now.

Come to Calgary, we're starting to have a thing for roundabouts.

Though, you can't go a block without running into pedestrian crossing lights, or school+playground zones.

I miss roundabouts. We had a ton of them in Israel...we only have a few here, but the few we do have most people don't know how to use properly. They'll either just sit and wait like there's a stop sign there, or they'll rush in with a car coming.

The big problem in roundabouts here is the fact that they cause accidents due to lane switching and people not being used to them.

I got on our local councilor for the city because they could have mitigated this..

When people go for license renewals, the city and province could have had people complete a simple lesson and quiz on these changes and how to deal with them. Instead, they do nothing at all, and I guess let the accidents sort it out.
