Hi,

My wife and daughter are Russian and we are now through with the naturalization process and my wife is a citizen.  We are going to go update the social security administration and get passports, but I have a few questions.  The process looks straight forward for my wife, but not for my daughter.  My daughter has her permanent residence card.

Can we update my daughter's SSN before we get her passport?   I am thinking we will have to wait until we get the passport for proof of citizenship.

For the passport, what documents do we need to take for my daughter?   Birth certificate, wife's certificate of naturalization, permanent residence card,.........   From what I am reading it looks like we have to get a notarized form or letter from her father in Russia saying its okay for her to get a passport.  We already have a letter stating that he is okay with her moving to the US, but it is over 3 months old.

I don't know that this makes a difference, but I am a US citizen by birth.  Any help you can provide, is greatly appreciated.  Thank you.

As your step daughter is over 15 you do not need a letter from her father. She will file for her passport on her own, not a parent filling for a child. It makes it easier.

Just the GC, moms naturalization certificate, and birth certificate.

I was wondering that.  I didn't see the 16 or younger comment on the passport document.  So, another question.  Can we apply for both of their passports at once or do we have to do them separately?  Ie, only one copy of certificate of naturalization.  Thank you for the reply.

The consent of the father is not required because of her age, however it is possible that it still may be *requested* by the passport agency you are filing with...it depends on how stringent the clerk wants to be when accepting the application.

If one passport place gives you a problem over it, just try to go to another place.

We did 3 at once. They will put a note on her application to see moms package and that will keep them together.

How did you convince the agent to NOT staple the naturalization certificate to the application/crush it when sending it in?  Just curious as I really don't want a big ol' hole in mine so soon after getting it...do you think they would they allow the certificate being placed in a protective sleeve and then the edge of that stapled to it?

I have this fear of some fool folding the certificate in half during the passport application process...I read on a thread where this happened to one lady--the clerk folded it in half, pressed the crease down firmly, and then stapled it to the application infront of her---and she was absolutely devastated.

Oh the stapling almost gave me a heart attack.  Thankfully no folding at all. She kept all documents unfolded and placed in a large envelope.
