Processing N400, question of terms

When USCIS states "as of May 9, 2017 we are processing cases from May 9 2016" what exactly are they referring to?  Looking at the file?  Issuing out interview notice from that date?  Conducting the actual interview?  I get it that they are "processing" but processing what step in the process is what I haven't been able to get a clear answer on.

It simple means, generally, some cases are outside their processing time, now it is time for them to notify to USCIS that the case takes longer than it should be. All cases have priority date before or on MAY 9 2016 (in your case) should be completed. 

In the other way, if your case falls outside their processing time, you can appeal to USCIS so they can schedule you an interview right away.

My case was logged on August 26, 2016, and based on the info I was given above, they were basically working on year old cases.  So based that "speed" or lack thereof, I may expect my case to be "processed" late this month (August).  But that still doens´t answer my question what "processing" means as in what is being processed.  Is it sending out interview notice, conducting the interview, approval complete, oath ceremony???

I am not sure what you are trying to tell. What is your Field Office?

What is your Priority Date?

What is your current case status?

My interview will be conducted in Fargo ND ASC office, with a priority date of August 26, 2016.  They have my case "in queue for scheduling" as they stated in a letter to me from May 9, 2017.  In that letter, they stated that "Fargo ASC is processing N400 applications from May 9, 2016.  So my question remains, processing what?  Where they conducting interviews from that priority date, or sending out interview notice for that priority date or what?

I'm surprised you haven't received an interview date yet. Did you get the "in line for scheduling" letter shortly after your biometrics? I ask because I filed the N-400 online and have received an interview date at the Fargo office already.
