Advice for Naturalization Interview

Hi Everybody!

I am scheduled for an interview in NYC field office. I would appreciate if you could give me any advice/suggestions on how to prepare for the interview. I applied as a US Citizen spouse. I have been a permanent resident for more than 3 years.

I also have several questions, I would love to hear your opinion:

1. My wife (US Citizen) won't be able to accompany me, she'll be traveling. Will it cause any issues (I have all the documentation, photos etc.) during the interview?

2. I fully paid federal & state taxes, still have NYC City tax debt. I am having hard time to contact the NYC City Tax department to discuss paydown agreement. I already paid part of the debt (I have check and voucher copy). Can it cause problems? Any suggestions for that issue?

Thank you!

It went ok , the IO ask the civics questions and I got the first 6 of them right, reading and writing then go over the application form. After she ask about owing tax and if I make arrangements to pay? I said and she said that I didn't send a copy with the application but I also had a copy with me so she took it and put it in the file. If I didn't have payment arrangements I would get request for evidence because she mark it on the paper she gave but crossed it out after. I think to avoid delay have all documents with you

Won't cause any issues because they wouldn't have allowed her to attend the interview, even if she were there---they only want to see you in the interview room itself :)

Question---how long did take from you completing biometrics to being scheduled for your interview?  Just curious as to the timeline since I am in NY as well (Queens office).

1) not a problem, as in almost all cases spouses are not allowed inside the torture chamber during the interview. Having the spouse there, holding hands and looking at each other, is just a sign for the I.O. that the marriage is still okay. That matters if the N-400 has been filed before the 5-year residency threshold.

2) can potentially be a problem. You need to be on good terms with the tax man, and the I.O. wants to have that in writing. If you show up empty-handed, you potentially delaying the adjudication for an unknown amount of time.

There is no room in this country for hyphenated Americanism. When I refer to hyphenated Americans, I do not refer to naturalized Americans. Some of the very best Americans I have ever known were naturalized Americans, Americans born abroad. But a hyphenated American is not an American at all . . . . The one absolutely certain way of bringing this nation to ruin, of preventing all possibility of its continuing to be a nation at all, would be to permit it to become a tangle of squabbling nationalities, an intricate knot of German-Americans, Irish-Americans, English-Americans, French-Americans, Scandinavian-Americans or Italian-Americans, each preserving its separate nationality, each at heart feeling more sympathy with Europeans of that nationality, than with the other citizens of the American Republic . . . . There is no such thing as a hyphenated American who is a good American. The only man who is a good American is the man who is an American and nothing else.

Very helpful, thanks!

Btw, can I take copy of her passport, not original?

Thanks!

Most likely, they are not going to ask for any ID related to the spouse since they are not the applicant...but take it just in case they do (I plan to).

Better to have it and they don't want it, than for them to ask for something you don't have ;)

That's the thing: on the day of the interview my spouse will be traveling, she will have the passport. So, will it cause issues if I take a copy of her passport?

Thanks.

If they ask (which is unlikely) to see your wife's passport, and then ask why you don't have it---just tell them she is travelling..obviously she needs her passport ON her then.  If you need to feel more at ease, then bring a copy of her travel itinerary along with the copy of her passport. :)
