Child miners aged four living a hell on Earth so YOU can drive an electric car: Awful human cost in squalid Congo cobalt mine that Michael Gove didn’t consider in his ‘clean’ energy crusade

It isn't about individual countries, it's about business.

The Chinese make the batteries and supply them to western manufacturers.

Manufacturers can put pressure on the battery makers and the mines to improve conditions, otherwise not purchase the supply.

I'm not saying it would fix everything, but it's also wrong to say "oh it sucks we can't do anything about it".

I'm guessing the mines in Australia have better working conditions. Give them all the business and see if the DRC continues with this.

No doubt the oil industry would give your approach a 10. Would be a good way of keeping the US tied to oil.

But thankfully your idea stands a snowballs chance in hell.

I'm not sure what the most recent update is but I seem to recall a similar issue with manufacturers in China for iPhone parts. Apple put pressure for them to improve working conditions.

Would have to look and see if it was effective at all. Again I never said it would completely fix the problem, but it's also wrong to just say we can't do anything. We don't need to buy cobalt from DRC. If that means increasing the prices of the batteries, that is something we have to weigh with the value of the lives in the DRC.

The conflict diamond market is similar. Fair trade market for cocoa as well. You pay more for things that are regulated and treat their workers fairly. Western world has to decide how much that is worth.

And a great example, because Apple hasn't improved anything for China's working conditions, because such higher prices would affect China's standing as a producer, causing people to go elsewhere, thus annihilating their global clout, which they won't do.

It's an easy thing for these countries, allow companies who will follow their standards. For rare resources like this, there's always a buyer at lower prices.

It neither hurts them nor forces them to change to how you want them to be. Has been and always will be a failing policy.

But can a Prius do this? Caution: for red blooded car loving American males only. If you fit the description, enjoy.

I did put a warning as to whom this car might appeal. This isn't a Fiat, and it is targeted to a niche market.

Very impressive and most likely the path of future high performance vehicles. But it just isn't the same without the engine roar and tire smoke.

we need to invent an add on that emulates the smoke sound and roar of your charger for ev. We can call it the Bulllitt Mode

The power on these full electrics puts 'stangs to shame.

Guaranteed though, even when most people wind up driving full electrics that can do 0-60 (0-100km) in 3 seconds, people in Calgary will still take 10 mins to reach highway speed when entering.
