Deciding on whether to change my last name

Hi, my husband and I have been married for 3 years now but just recently were able to have the big family wedding. He is a US citizen and I hold a green card but originally I'm from Khabarovsk, Russia. I'd like to follow the typical process of adjusting my last name but want to know how big of a deal this is before I do. I live in Hawaii and so my Russian embassy would be the one in San Francisco. I am due to renew my passport in beginning of 2018. We are also going through the 2 year extension/renewal of the green card status.  If you have any experience in this please let me know how long all the changes might take, how many trips to the embassy this might require and/or if I'd need to travel back home to do this. I have a girlfriend whose husband is German and she was made to go back to Russia and wait on her passport adjustments for over 3 months. I don't mind doing this except that my job wouldn't just let me off for 3 months. We are also hoping to go to Russia in June of 2018 and I don't want our desire to change my last name to interfere with my travel papers. If it takes that long I'll at the very least wait. 

Will the social security card need to be adjusted as well?

Sorry for putting some embassy questions on here. I'll check on the russian website for this as well. It's just that if you've ever worked with them they aren't very communicative, so, any extra feedback would help.
