And what about all of the contract laborers that receive 1099's instead of W2s? Like carpenters? Plumbers? Field laborers?

Let's be realistic shall we? I started working at 15  (for my father....a CPA) and I am now 45....do you actually think you are going to talk a 20 something into worrying about the 401K?

And they do not cost you anything.....there's a whole world out there that lives off cash  (and has for eternity).

As for Social Security....you only get out what you put in....

You are so wrong.  They cost us honest Americans billions of dollars in lost tax revenue.  That translates into me and all the other HONEST Americans paying more taxes to maintain the cheaters.

Can be - but likely not

https://www.paychex.com/articles/payroll-taxes/irs-guidelines-on-independent-contractor-or-employee

The contains link to irs but summarizes three main points:

Behavioral: Does the company control or have the right to control what the worker does and how the worker does their job?

Financial: Are the business aspects of the worker’s job controlled by the payer? (These include things like how the worker is paid, whether expenses are reimbursed, who provides tools/supplies, etc.)

Type of Relationship: Are there written contracts or employee-type benefits (i.e., contracts or employee-type benefits (i.e., pension plan, insurance, vacation pay, etc.)? Will the relationship continue and is the work performed a key aspect of the business?”

Completely disagree....a nanny is most certainly "contract labor" as is a maid, personal landscaper, pool maintainer....an employer has complete control over the behavior of the employee...ie...the nanny is most definitely a contracted employee....

Do you know how many people work for cash? Hell, half the instagram "models" are working for cash. Chill. The OP asked a question we aren't here to judge how or what she does w her taxes.

Yes, I know millions, more likely billions of dollars in tax revenue is lost due to these illegal activities.  It is illegal to earn an income and not report that income for taxes.  I did not "judge" the op.  This is what always happens...people work for cash and then they want to buy a car or a house or in this case bring a spouse into the US and guess what?!  They can't because they can't prove income.  The op states that she has not reported the income.  She has no paper trail.   I am trying to help her.  She has no way of proving any income at this point.  This is a problem for her.  The point you are trying to make is moot.  It doesn't matter how many people work for cash, that doesn't make it okay.  Perhaps you need to take a chill pill?

Except that those "Instagram models" are not here dealing with immigration issues due to unreported income.

My friend's mum is a nanny and she always asks her employer to take out tax, SS, etc deductions for her. Not everyone of her employers want to do this because it cost them money and time to do this but some do it .
