Hello everyone.  I just have a question for anyone who has purchased airline tickets for someone else.

I found a few sites saying that airlines sometimes ask to see the original credit card used to buy the tickets.  If it cannot be shown, the customer cannot board the plane.

I am buying tickets for my fiance and our son coming from the Philippines so obviously they won't have it.

I'm sure a lot of you sent money, or went to meet up and fly back together.  But to those who bought tickets for your fiance online, while waiting in the US, did they run into any issues?

Lots of people have to be doing this every day and I find it hard to believe they all are driving to their closest airlines and showing proof of buying the ticket.

I called delta and was told that is what I will need to do.  Buy the tickets online, then drive to the airport in Atlanta, bring id, my cc, and the confirmation # from the purchase.

After showing them I'm guessing they add comments to my order saying I proved my id/cc so my fiance can board the plane w/o having the card. Is that what everyone is doing?

I didn't really have to show the original form of payment when my husband bought my ticket last time. Even when I buy tickets going home, they never really ask for the cc used. I think what's most important thing is your passport/id.

I've bought tickets through Delta and I haven't had to do that. Unless it is because you are buying a ticket for someone else? But my husband has bought tickets for me and we haven't had to do that.

Can you get a additional card from your same account for your fiance? Maybe if you do that, you can buy the ticket with her card.

They never asked for the purchasing credit card. I always book our travel, even when we can't fly together, and it's never been an issue.

Congratulations on your son and fiance coming to the US - I wish you nothing but happiness :)

Another option is for you to make a photocopy of your credit card (front only) and you ID, and write a letter mentioning you bought the tickets for so and so.

Include your phone number, etc.

Maybe that will give you some peace of mind.

A lot of honestly well intended but bad information in this thread!

Many airlines DO require you to present the card of purchase at the airport. This is especially true in Asia, where fraud tends to run much more rampant. Korean airlines for example are VERY VERY strict about this. Even in the USA it often varies wildly from airport to airport. So you might have an easy time at one place and a hard time at another. You will notice the Kiosks will often require you to swipe your booking credit card at check-in, this is exactly what they are doing. The closer you purchase to the departure date, the more likely even lenient airports will require you to present the card.

When you purchase a flight for someone else, there is a process that you can go through to remove this restriction. It usually involves filling out a form attesting that you are 100% responsible for the cost of this ticket and that it is not fraud, you then go to the airport and show the form, the card and your ID. It then gets filed in the system as the ticket has already been verified.

For example, Delta says on their website:

Quote

To safeguard against credit/debit card fraud, the purchaser may have to show us the credit/debit card along with a valid photo ID. The time varies based on the billing address of the credit/debit card or the country of travel. If the purchaser is not traveling, they can show us their credit/debit card and ID at an airport ticket counter or another ticket office location, whichever is most convenient.

As a tourist I've never been asked to present my card when checking in. You could call the airline and ask

This happens alot in the Philippines. I have had to send a front back copy picture copy of my cc to my wife so she can get on the flight that I purchased.

I've mentioned this before, but what I did was get my wife (fiancée at the time) a credit card as an authorized signer during one of my latter trips. It's probably too late now for the OP, but this would solve the issues for future folks who aren't able to fly with their fiancé/fiancée to the US.

OP, the purchasing of ticket for someone else when the card holder is not flying with them various by Airline policies. Pedro mentioned Delta, so if you use them you will have to follow their policy.

Thanks for all the replies.  I bought the tickets online today through Delta.  A message popped up before I could finalize saying that I need to show my cc in person.

I called Delta to verify and was told the same.  I need to go to the ATL airport and show my cc, confirmation number, and id.  Once that is done my fiance and our son

will have no problem boarding in the Philippines.  Pain in the butt but I'm only about an hour or so away from the airport.  I will get peace of mind and go Saturday, 4 days before my family finally gets to come home.  Thanks again, and some good advice in this thread for those in the process.

This is very common with airlines in Asia. Although they some on this thread have said its never happened. I can tell you it has happened to me personally 3 times in Vietnam, China, and Malaysia. We were able to get around this problem with sending her a copy of the credit card front and back. I also sent an email saying I authorized her to travel using my credit card.

And this was sufficient information for the airlines.
