I'm the principal applicant and my wife (US citizen) is sponsoring me. We both live in Canada and are migrating to the US.

I've paid/submitted the DC260 and am in the process of gathering the financial and supporting documents to be submitted to complete this 2nd last step before I'm scheduled for an interview.

In the interim, our house is being built and will be complete in 6 months and over this time, I need to make a few trips to inspect the process.

At what point in the process am I no longer able to visit the US before they bring up my sponsoring status? If I can prove to them that I intend to come back and the reason for my visit (inspecting my home build process) will they let me enter?

Thanks

Hy there, and welcome to VJ.

You can visit the US up until you immigrate here, provided you bring proof of ties to Canada.

CBP is probably aware that an immigrant visa petition has been filed (and approved in your case) on your behalf, and all you're doing is awaiting the issuance of a visa at this point.

That being said, you will generally be expected to bring a lot more proof of ties to Canada. Bring a job letter for example, that's a good, strong tie. Bring financial evidence. RRSPs/ TFSAs even regular savings account statements. They like to see that. A return ticket of course.

Just tell them the truth. You are building a house and you're just going for an inspection and coming back in x amount of days. It's probably in your favor that your wife is with you in Canada too, so make sure that you mention that she will be there when you return.

Good luck

You will also want to bring any notifications that you have received from USCIS with you that shows that you have filed. When I was going back and forth from TO to NY state, I always made sure that I carried the most current billing information that I had with me in a small file folder as well as  any notifications from USCIS about my K1 application and the status of that application. I was pulled into secondary once and showed the agent all of my paperwork that I had that showed my ties to Canada. I never had a problem after that.
