Evidence of Children on N-400

My wife just got done filling out the online version of the N-400 and when it got to the page asking for evidence of our children we hit a major roadblock. Our issue is this: in the state of Wisconsin it is a felony to scan or photocopy a Birth Certificate, certified or uncertified. So what am I supposed to upload for this section? The only thing we have that might suffice (although I doubt it) is a letter from the hospital that is signed and dated which states that our daughter was born there on her birthdate. Would this be ok? Or is this going to cause issues? I can't think of any other documents to submit. Any advice?

this may sound stupid but could you sent the birth certificate by snail mail? or call them and make an appointment?

I don't know how that would work.  Submit the N-400 electronically and then wait for them to ask for it? I think just randomly sending it wouldn't work, as I wouldn't know where to send it to. I don't want my wife's application to be put in jeaporady by not having the correct piece of evidence for this portion. I guess I just don't understand what our children have to do with anything when it comes to the N-400, as this section is completely separate from the evidence of a bona marriage section.

Don't lose sleep, take the actual original to your N400 interview down the road. Your application can't be denied because of this and RFE's are very rare with N400 unlike other immigrant petitions. You'll have a chance to bring anything extra to your interview.

Yeah that is what we did, though in my day it was more common to bring paper copies of stuff anyways.

Thanks for the reply. So you'd agree that we could just upload the hospital letter and then bring the actual certificate with us to the interview?

Looks like you are not the first one to bring this up on VJ.

I guess you could do this two ways: 1) Get another certified copy (probably will cost your a trip to the town clerk and $5-10 per copy) and send it over, or  2) use the hospital records as you suggest, attach a copy of this WI law and say you will be bringing the original to the interview.

 

I cannot imagine them giving you a hard time over this. FO people must be aware of this rule.

I'm not surprised. Our state sometimes boggles my mind with the amount of convoluted random laws like this. When you say get another and send it over, you mean send it after we e-file? Or something else?

I meant to send it with your application. I'm not familiar with e-file, do you need to scan supporting documents into pdf or jpeg? I guess that is also against the WI law, right?

Yeah, we're doing e-file. From what I've read it shaves like 2 months off the process. Scans are also against the law to scan, unless you're a government or financial entity doing the scanning (the only two exceptions).

they must have dealt with a birth certificate forgery cartel in WI. Smh...

 

I guess best way is to make a note that according the WI law xx.yy you couldn't make a digital copy of the birth certificate and  you will be bringing the document to the interview, and upload that as the birth certificate. Good luck!
