So heres the situation. My husbands legal name is something like John Robert Smith. Everyone calls him by his middle name "Robert". It drives him crazy that on the credit cards and his DL and what not they have his name printed as John Robert Smith and not just Robert Smith. I explained to him that they have to use his legal name and he cant just drop the John with out doing a name change.

He is currently in Norway (where he is from) and wants to do a name change there and get a new passport while there. He wants to change the name from John Robert Smith to Robert John Smith. They told him it can take up to 2 weeks to change his name and once they do he can get a new passport.

What kind of problem is this going to make?

He is going to be there long enough to get it done but Im concerned. I know he will have to change the airline ticket home cause its under John Robert and his new passport would be Robert John. But what about the greencard? Will he have trouble entering with a name change order from Norway, a new passport under the new name and the unexpired GC under the old name?

Right now he really hasnt done anything ... yet. Should he change the name while there and get a new passport and go to the Embassy for a stamp or travel doc of some kind? Or is it better to wait until he comes back and get the name change done in a US court and then figure out how to get a new Norwegian passport from the US?

Anyone with experiences or any input is welcome.
