Anecdote: After the elections, there was this trend by some to go into places like Starbucks and when asked for their name say "Trump" so they write that on the cup and call out Trump. My wife is kinda like me - far from a huge fan of Trump, but, considering only 11% in the area where that starbucks is voted for him, decided to see what happens if she joins in on the fun. So one time we were in a starbucks, and when asked for her name she said Trump. The flower child on the other side said "what" and again she said "trump". Once coffee was done we have come to find out the fun was ruined - nothing was written on the cup.

I'm a man of principle. Even though I personally didn't like the idea of her doing that, the mere fact that they think they should be allowed to decide which names are good enough to write and which aren't has led me since then to never ever give my name out to them. From now on, every time I'm there and they ask my name I simply say "no name". Seriously. I'd like to see more people do that.

Have you noticed your coffee tastes a little different since you started doing that?

lol...no. I watch them like a hawk :D besides, I very rarely do coffee, it's usually when I just grab it for her. Got tired of them constantly screwing up my name anyway.

Nope, not really. Principles matter. The look on their face when I say no name is priceless. I've always hated them asking for my name anyway, but the straw was when they decided to refuse to write a name they didn't like, so now I refuse to give it to them. It was a funny anecdote, too seriously is when someone decides to actually comment on it the way you did.

Principles do matter, I agree. On principal though, it's never a great idea to mess with the people who are serving you food or drink. You have way more to lose than they do.

If it was me, I'd go to a different coffee shop. Way better options for coffee than Starbucks, and spending your dollars elsewhere is the most principled way of all to let a vendor know you don't like their policies.

As a man of principle, surely you can see that by saying her name is Trump your wife was clearly violating the principle of the "name on the cup" process at Starbucks. It was quite obvious that she wasn't giving them her actual name. She didn't respect the process, so they had no obligation to do so either.

As for the OP -

Did the boy want a cake shaped in the form of Trump's hat? It looks like hat in the letter. I'm assuming he means head. Even if I were a fan of Trump I couldnt' imagine wanting a cake that is shaped like his hair. I don't think I would want a cake shaped like any person's hair. Hair and Cake shouldn't mix.

It didn't matter which exact location, I just decided after that day I'm not bothering giving them my name. It's my right to do so and it really shouldn't lead to a whole conversation. I'm not a fan of starbucks but can't help the woman likes her venti 2 pump vanilla non fat caramel macchiato. We only occasionally do starbucks, usually it's DD in the morning on our way in.

They don't know and can't determine what someone's name really is. I'm pretty sure there's more than one Trump out there. I thought it was rude not to write the name she gave them, whatever it was, even though like I said I personally wouldn't have done what she did but she's her own person. So I'm "rude" back and just don't give my name. Nobody said I had to. It's a dumb thing anyway.

I don't really think you can pull the "Her name really could have been Trump!" card because A. You know it isn't and B. Even you admit it was a "thing" going around at the time. It was soono after the election.

Give the Starbucks staff more credit.

If you try to play a joke with a system, you can't then complain if the person on the other side doesn't play along. She wasn't taking their system seriously. That was rude. I think what they did was entirely reasonable.

Now if Trump came in and asked them to put Trump on the cup that would be different.

Geeze you guys must be really bored today. I wasn't really expecting a response to my post, much less 6 of them. My wife is the goofy type, she likes to mess around with people and thought since this area is 90% liberal it would be fun. They decided to just leave the cup empty so now I make damn sure it's always empty(letters, not liquid). That's all there is to it. I always hated their "system" to start with. If that offends anybody that's too bad. You don't get to pick and choose which names you agree to write(yes, even if one is Trump) but expect everyone to give you theirs. Really, that's all.

I'm sure they've written worse than "pickle" before.

i don't doubt it, just i didn't buy the 'pickle' kid story from the beginning, now there's an added layer (pun intended) of a cake struggle?

I only responded the way I did because I see a contradinction between saying you believe in principles, and saying you disagree with how Starbucks handled the situation. Your wife veered away from the principle of asking for your name on a cup. Therefore the Starbucks staff did the same. It would have been the same if she had told them her name was "Boaty McBoatface" or "Slappa yobum". It was clearly very obvious her name wasn't Trump. Not to mention unless she paid cash (do people still do that these days?) the person asking for her name also went through a credit/debit transaction that likely has her name on it. Regardless of how they knew it, they were clearly right.

Principles are just out the window in this case on both sides.

Well....I disagree. :)

Anyway the reason I wrote that was just to demonstrate how "anti" some people can be. Between the cake and that...

And I wasn't kidding, I have not given them my name since and don't plan to - they always get it wrong anyway. :)
