I'd often see people trade their food stamps / EBT to someone else in exchange for drugs, whether it be directly or buying the food themselves and exchanging for the drugs outside. No one hid it either.

Stuff seriously needs to be scaled back at minimum due to abuse.

When I was a kid, the food stamps were paper, not debit card.  Almost every bodega (Hispanic corner store) would buy food stamps for 50¢ on the dollar.  Girls had more kids ONLY to get more food stamps and what they used to call government assistance which was CASH.

Now that they have the card, it's not as easy, but my downstairs neighbor takes her friends shopping on her FS card.  She charges the same 50¢ on the dollar.  She asked my wife she if she was interested.  I told my wife not to even think about it.  I will not be part of that corruption.

That's outrageous! You really should've taken advantage of that opportunity to explain to them the benefits of a healthy diet. As a fellow American, I believe you shirked your duties and let the country down. Bad on you man. :(

They didn't speak English.  Nor Spanish, And I didn't recognize what they spoke.

A year into Obama's second term food stamps peaked. Well I'll be damned. Must be Bush's fault.

Something called the Great Recession had something to do with it.

I know your white-privileged, sheltered, suburban life doesn't allow you to comprehend what happens in poor neighborhoods, but give it another shot.

i can only go by my experience, and i don't know anyone who's reproduced for food stamps or welfare. i'm sort of thrown off by your premise that food stamp/welfare recipients only exist in poor neighborhoods, and also that they are non working/lazy. facts aside, i realize you are only speaking of your own personal assumptions, one's you made in childhood no less.

Ya think there's lots of food stamps being distributed/used in upper-middle to upper class neighborhoods?  LOL

I'm speaking from personal experience, not assumptions.  No need to assume, when you witness it all.  I was a teenager, I wasn't 6, and I'm 40 now, so the memory is still solid.  I personally knew 3 young women (we weren't friends or anything but knew them from the neighborhood and everybody knew all their business) that were asking guys to impregnate them and did eventually intentionally become pregnant.  And they had the babies and were happy as hell.  One had a serious drug problem, and lost her 3 kids to child services (ASC) soon after.  Another lived down the block from us, mother of the year, and her kids (like 5-6 year olds) would be outside on the street running around at 2am by themselves while she was in the apt upstairs.  Nobody seemed to care much.  These days, somebody would be calling ACS and they would be taken away.  The third disappeared, I'm guessing she moved away.

Unfortunately personal experience is not all that useful.

While I appreciate your example of 3 random women you happen to have known (but weren't friends with! thanks for the clarification), that doesn't really tell us much.

Making judgments from personal experience is fraught with horrible biases.

You've provided us essentially with a "Case Report". It is essentially the lowest level of evidence possible, when you apply scientific rigor.

you'd be surprised who's on food stamps, and who might live in a nice house but living check to check renting. i do understand that you're making assumptions based on your personal experience, because as a teenager - you knowing girls were getting pregnant to get welfare just sounds too convenient, since that (and the grocery line) story is basically conservative hate the poor 101.

but what a lovely story. "happy as hell" ..so i'm gathering not as lucrative a business as one would think, babies for welfare.

If you "weren't friends or anything" doesn't that diminish the personal experience just a bit? I mean if you weren't friends you didn't really know them personally and are just going on hearsay from other peeps. Maybe the peeps feeding you the info were just disgruntled dudes that had an axe to grind because they weren't chosen to father one of their gov't funded silver spooned babies? Just a hunch.

did you not read the story? everyone knew their business and they (the 'girls') were going around asking people to get them pregnant..and eventually, they got pregnant = very happy. that's biology.
