Quick question about travel dates outside the US

But if you spent an excess amount of time outside the US while a permanent resident, then they subtract that time from your three years. Say she got a greencard Jan 1, 2015. Give them the dates (after after receiving her permanent residency) that she was away from the US. What she did prior to having permanent  residency has nothing to do with this section or the residency rule. 

Yes, I understand the purpose of this section. I'm not that thick. Was just verifying this issue given how ####### these officers can be with the questions that are asked and how they are worded.

It's good to ask questions to make sure---sometimes the forms can be very confusing with the way questions are worded.  Especially when it says 5 instead of "past 3 or 5 years".  They should really update that part of the form.  Rest assured, though, that the adjudicator will see how you filled out the very first part of the form under which box you checked determining your eligibility and realize that the rest of your application applies only to the previous 3 years.
