Campus threats forced lock-downs and evacuations at universities in Texas, Oklahoma and Tennessee and two public schools in Louisiana on Tuesday, a day after a Virginia Tech student's shooting rampage killed 33 people.

In Louisiana, parents picked up hundreds of students from Bogalusa's high school and middle school amid reports that a man had been arrested Tuesday morning for threatening a mass killing in a note that alluded to the murders at Virginia Tech.

Schools Superintendent Jerry Payne said both schools were locked down and police arrested a 53-year-old man who allegedly made the threat in a note he gave to a student headed to the private Bowling Green School in Franklinton. Both towns are in southeastern Louisiana.

"The note referred to what happened at Virginia Tech," Payne said. "It said something like, 'If you think that was bad, then you haven't seen anything yet."

In Austin, authorities evacuated buildings at St. Edward's University after a threatening note was found, a school official said.

Police secured the campus perimeter and were searching the buildings, St. Edward's University spokeswoman Mischelle Amador said. She declined to say where the note was found and said its contents were "nonspecific."

The two other scares were determined to be unfounded.

At the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, officials ordered three campus administration buildings evacuated for almost two hours Tuesday morning in response to a telephone bomb threat. The city's bomb squad searched the buildings but found nothing, campus spokesman Chuck Cantrell said.

Cantrell said there was no reason to believe the bogus threat was related to the shootings at Virginia Tech, but "we just chose to err on the side of caution today."

The other, at the University of Oklahoma, had started with a report of a man spotted on campus carrying a suspicious object, officials said.

The man was carrying an umbrella, not a weapon, and he later identified himself to authorities, University of Oklahoma President David Boren said in a statement. Boren initially had said the person was believed to carrying a yoga mat.

"We now consider the matter closed," Boren said. "We always want to err on the side of caution in a situation like this."

At St. Edward's in Austin, students who live on campus were being allowed to return to their dormitories as police finished searching each building, Amador said. Faculty, staff and all other students were asked to stay away from the campus, and morning and afternoon classes were canceled. About 5,200 students are enrolled at the Catholic university south of downtown Austin.

Amador said the university's reaction was not influenced by Monday's attack at Virginia Tech.

"No matter what day or when this would have happened, we will always take the necessary precautions to protect our students, our faculty, our staff, the entire university community," she said.

But when we turn to the Hebrew literature, we do not find such jokes about the donkey. Rather the animal is known for its strength and its loyalty to its master (Genesis 49:14; Numbers 22:30).

i don't know if the US really has more crazy people per capita....but they certainly take their craziness to a higher level.

I honestly blame our media. It hypes up and sensationalizes ####### like this over and over and glorifies it, so sickos watching the news or reading it on the Internet stop and think, "Hmmm... I bet I could top that!"

More copycats on the news. I am not surprised though.

A friend of mine was saying how the kids in her class, fifth graders, where saying to each other, "did you see how cool that guy was and how he chained the doors..". Unfortunately there is nothing she can do as the principal says they are only kids and joking. And then we wonder how this ###### starts.

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

Absolutely sick!!!! I do agree that the media sensationalizes things, but I also think that the violence in movies and video games has to be bad as well. It also unfortunate the so many people (including those who are not mentally stable) have such easy access to guns. I'm not saying that ALL guns should be banned, but isn't there a better way to control who has access to that stuff????

We kinda have to remember they are 5th graders, they think anything is "cool". My daughter is a 5th grader, and she stated that some of the boys in her class were talking about it, she said all of the girls were feeling sad. 11 yr old boys, thinking a mass murderer on the news is "cool", i blame games :)

Video games, hmm....I played them since I was a child. And, my parents were strict as hell on me. Whipping bicycle chains on me when I miss a school day. It turn out I'm not as crazy as those kids. It's more of the upbringing, and their mental state. Some kids take things for granted, and ignore real world situation. It's hard to point fingers on one object.

Hubby & I were in Walmart the other day and went to the electronics section and they had an X-box (or some such console) playing in demo mode, and as I watched in horror a very very real looking hunt & kill game demo was being played. Not to mention there were MANY children around looking at videos and games and such and this game CLEARLY had to have a R rating, but the fact that it was SO real. The graphics in video games are like reality now. Incredible that we have that technology - but honestly what is the boundry now between fantasy and reality? It's pretty blurred these days.

Not to mention in November we drove to Portland ME for a concert and as we were driving i noticed this fantastic Mountain sticking up out of no where (Mount Katahdin), and I immediatly looked at my best friend and said "that can't be real - it must have been photoshopped in". She got a great kick out of it but i've been chewing on the implications of it for a while now. Reality can be so twisted and warped by our technology (photoshop etc.), that we are very "lary" of believing truth when we see it or experience it. We are starting down a road where the line between reality & technology is getting very blurred and IMHO this stuff is going to get worse before it gets better.

True you can't just blame technology for everything - but it is an interesting debate (although perhaps up to this point in time and from all we know not at all pertinant to the Virgina Shooting).

That's child abuse, not just "strict as hell".

No. It's not child abuse. In your perspective it may seem cruel. But, it made me into a strong will person. An individual that look at life differently than peer pressure, coolness, partying. I don't take friends for granted, or anything. That type of discipline made me think clearer about life. That you must perservere the pain, and think of your own future to survive in this world. You must be able to withstand all hardship to stand up, and keep your head up. This type of discipline didn't turn me into a sociopath.

And, it forces me to do my best all the time. But, I'm not going to hit my kids. I'll just give them very strict rules that they must follow. Kinda improvising what my parents have taught.
