Consider yourself lucky if it takes a year, prepare for longer than that.

It takes between 1 week and 2 months before you can get your bio appointment, once you do it, sit comfy and wait... the 10 yrs GC takes between 12-18 months to arrive. (I have been waiting 13 months now). Good luck.

they extended it automatically as you will not need 10 year green card

you can apply for citzenship 90 days before the 3 year date of POE

Incorrect. The OP  has to apply for a ten year green card. The extension letter purely allows you to work and travel for a further year, while the permanent card process is underway.

I can explain it to you. But I can't understand it for you.

Am I gonna get a new  green card for a year..then another one for 10 year..cuz I wanna travel overseas

No. You have applied for a ten year card, as you have already got the 2 year card. The extension letter is to tide you over until such time as you get the the ten year card. There is no one year card.

I can explain it to you. But I can't understand it for you.

Takes a lot of patience when dealing with government. We filed for our 10 year green card in July 2016. Still waiting I know there are some posts about going ahead with citizenship but that wait is even longer. I did speak with someone at immigration and she told me was taking roughly 13 months and 1 week to process. I'm almost at that timeline. My one year extension letter doesn't expire until end of September this year so hopeful will have by then. And hopefully they will get their act together a process paperwork in a more timely matter.

We are going to apply for roc in April 2018.  If my wife's 2yr gc expires in that time span and we get the 1yr extension, what happens if that extension expires and we still have no card?

You make an info pass appointment and have her passport stamped.

I can explain it to you. But I can't understand it for you.

Also many people here do not want citizenship (Indonesians for example - Well most do not as it costs less to live there and they do not recognize duel citizenship) and just the GC so waiting for citizenship instead of 10 year GC is not an option. However regardless of Citizenship or 10 yr GC a wait seems rather a waste of time to be concerned with. You can do all things on a 2 yr conditional that you can on a 10 so whats big deal really.
