USC husband wants UK citizenship

Hey all.

 

Slightly random question, hoping someone can point me in the right direction.

 

I came to US on K1, we got married, I now have my 2 year greencard.

 

If my husband wanted UK citizenship, would we have to relocate to the UK (in the very far future), or is this something he would be eligible for in the US through his marriage to me/something we could apply for from the US?

Thank you so much! What a helpful answer. I'm sure absolutely nobody on this forum has gone through this and so you're right - this totally wasn't the appropriate place to ask such a question! There's just NO way anyone moving to the US would have wanted their USC partner to have the option of dual citizenship so I just have no idea why I felt like this site would be a great starting point to ask.

You need to be resident in the UK to be able to apply for British citizenship based on marriage to one of the Queen's subjects.

Its a slightly different process but in essence the same as us Brits coming here. You'd have to live with him in the U.K. for a number of years before he can qualify for citizenship. It's not one of the perks of being married to a Brit. 

 

If you do decide to move back to the U.K. together, note that there is a strict financial requirement in place to bring family members into the country and no joint or co-sponsors are allowed. Although this is currently being challenged in the courts.
