Hi There,

Recently I have been moved from Canada to United States. I got my SSN and Green Card too. Can you please recommend any unsecured credit card as I don't have credit history in United States. I know that  I do have option for go with secured credit card but I don't want to go with that.

I did open my bank account in local bank. Also I would like to let you know that I'm full time employed since July 2017.

Quick response will will be appreciated :-)

Thanks

Ashish

Does your local bank have a credit card?  I don't know how they handle new immigrants, but I would start with a major bank like Wells Fargo or Bank of America for a secured card.  For an unsecured card, to build credit, look at Capital One.  They also have secured cards..  Also, store cards from places like Walmart, Target, etc can help as well as gasoline cards.

Bank of American has one with a 500 dollar security deposit and if you make payments you get the money back rather fast. You can even ask them to give it back earlier.

You always need to start like that. Otherwise, you'll never get a credit card.

You have to start somewhere. Why are you so against a secured card? The only negative is having a bit of money tied up for 6-12 months but in return you get a quickly improved credit score.

Otherwise,  I'd say the other options are already given. Apply for a store card or be an authorized user for a while.

We all wish we could skip the first steps :)

Thanks Guys for your valuable feedback :-)

I'm not against with secured card. Being a new comer I don't want to tied up my $ that's why..lol

I was a banker in Canada and in Canada we offer 500$ of unsecured credit card for new immigrant with no annual fees and getting cash back too. That's why I thought here also we getting something like that.

Any experience regarding CapitalOne MasterCard. What you guys think will I be getting?

Capital one rejected my application for the secured card because my credit was inexistent.

Did you open an account with rbc Canada and rbc USA? If so you could have gotten a US credit card based on your Canadian credit.

Yea, there's nothing like that.  You have to start from scratch. I got a secured card with BofA - you can put in from $300 in deposit I believe. In 6-12 months with paying in full and keeping utilization at around 10-30% each month they will graduate it to an unsecured card, they have 2 cashback options; one money rewards that gives 3% back on fuel (purchases in gas station) 2% for groceries and 1% for everything else, no sign ups or fees and one travel rewards card. It will probably be easier if you start a checking with them too. From other VJers and my own experience they are one of the most immigrant friendly banks.

With CapOne if they approve you it will probably be a platinum with low credit line, having a job helps but as mentioned you might not get it until later.

Do you have a current relationship with American Express in Canada? If so, they will transfer a credit card for you. They offer a program called global transfer.

Capital One is generally a lender that will start you off with a 300-500 unsecured credit limit right away..

A big bank will generally only issue a secured card if you have no credit history yet, but it's not as bad as it sounds. The minimum deposit is generally $300, and it gets returned in 6-12 months if you use your card responsibly.

Yes, the Bank of America card I mentioned is like that. They give you a visa. They never have annual fees. Plus, I believe that the first year is 0% interest rate.
