Green Card Has Maiden Name - Is that correct?

Hey everyone!

 

I just received my green card in the mail today, I was super excited, ripped into the letter and noticed my green card has my maiden name on it, not my married name.

I filled out the I-485 with my married name, but obviously all the ID i filed along with it was prior to marriage and therefore had my maiden name (Passport for example).

 

Is it supposed to have my maiden name or married name?

Your timeline says you adjusted from a K-1. When you filed AOS I'm assuming you submitted your marriage certificate. Does your marriage certificate reflect that you took your spouse's last name?

I just got off the phone with immigration.

 

Yes my marriage certificate reflected my name change. I already received my EAD/AP combo card, which is in my married name, and I filed that along with my AOS. 

I found out that it was USCIS' fault, not mine. I'm about ready to scream

if it's their fault they should give you a new one, you wouldn't have to pay for a new one

My question wasn't about whether I would have to pay for one, but rather whether it was meant to be that way -- which, after a phone call with USCIS, it's not. Sooo, sending my card right back.

It may take several months to get a new card by the way.

I got that info at my biometrics appointment: "Your EAD/AP will come in your married name bur your greencard will come in your maiden name because your maiden name is still the name we have in the system". I sent a letterto NBC, put in a service request and finally went for an infopass and no one wanted to help me update my name in the system. Luckily I was chosen for an interview and it was corrected right there and then.

 

I feel for you. It's so hard to deal with USCIS, there are so many mistakes made and so few employees who actually want to help and correct those mistakes.

That's interesting, thanks for that! So strange that they'll do an EAD/AP in married name, but not the green card. 

 

I'm in the process of filling out the I-90 paperwork and it requires me to mail back the green card, which is a huuuuuuuge pain. Who knows how long it'll take to get a new one, too :/ This is so frustrating, I feel like it should be common sense that the green card is in your married name, considering when you apply for AOS, you apply in your married name and provide proof of name change...
