Bush administration hasn't decided yet on NJ disaster declaration in wake of storm

WASHINGTON - The Bush administration hasn’t yet decided whether to declare New Jersey a federal disaster area.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency says on its Web site it is deploying damage-assessment teams from New Jersey to Maine.

A FEMA spokeswoman didn't immediately return a telephone message this morning.

On Monday, New Jersey’s congressional delegation wrote to President Bush seeking a disaster declaration, which would make Garden State residents and businesses eligible for loans and other aid.

The letter says the nor’easter dumped more rain in the state than any other storm since 1882 and has caused extensive property damage, evacuations and power outages.

Acting Gov. Richard Codey has issued a disaster declaration.
