Online Immigrant Visa and Alien Registration Application (DS-260)

 

Do you authorize disclosure of information from this form to the Department of Homeland Security, the Social Security Administration, and such other U.S. Government agencies as may be required for the purposes of assigning you a social security number (SSN) and issuing you a Social Security card and do you authorize the Social Security Administration to share your SSN with the Department of Homeland Security?

 

The application also says that the applicant's response does not limit or restrict the Government's ability to obtain his or her social security number or other information on this form for enforcement or other purposes as authorized by law.

 

Even if No is answered, the government can still do what it wants and disclose what it wants. I guess that answering yes may be the safest bet.

That is the question the beneficiary is asked. However, for most of us, it is the petitioner who fills out the online application.

What is the appropriate answer?

In a case where the visa applicant is fluent in English, I would answer no.  Otherwise, answer yes, then answer truthfully.  Yes, is definitely an appropriate answer either way.

You want to answer yes, so that the Social Security card can be issued and sent without further action by you after entering the USA.
