Hai. We applied for CR1 Visa and received the interview letter (P4) recently, but NVC stated first name unknown (FNU) in front of the beneficiary's name. We're going to the interview at US embassy Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on September, 2017. Does this effect the visa and greencard once they're issued? How do I fix this matter before going to the interview? Should I get my passport changed? My passport will expired in 4 years.

I am facing the same issue. It irritates me because all our forms and documents have my first name listed under the first name column. Yet, NVC decided to just put it as FNU. My US fiance contacted NVC upon receiving the NVC letter and they said there's nothing that they could do. Your only choice now is to highlight the matter to the consular officer during your visa interview so that he/she could ensure that your first name is listed under the first name column on your visa.

Not sure why you should get your passport changed because it won't solve the FNU problem. Also, with 4 years validity, I don't think our local immigration would allow you to renew your passport in advance. You can get it renewed in the US when the time comes. If your US residence is in the state of IL, you can mail your application to the US Embassy in DC and they will then forward it to the Consulate General in NYC. Alternatively, you can rock up to the Consulate General in NYC and get your passport renewed in person and receive a new passport within one day.

For my I-129F, K-1, AOS, EAD, AP and ROC detailed timelines, please refer to my timeline page :)

ROC filed on December 1, 2020, assigned to SRC, approved within 106 days on February 18, 2021.

My sincerest gratitude to all VJers, especially the late geowrian.

contact your US Embassy regarding the same they will guide you properly about the procedure and try all efforts to resolve the same before your interview and update your passport by bifurcation of name or adding surname as it will save you from lot more hassles when you get into USA or try to make correction there.

I got re-issued with new updated passport with name bifurcation and send scanned copy to NVC FOR correction on Jul 22,2017 and same was corrected on 18 Aug 2017 as I got informed by E-mail.

My family  finally  got their  interview  letter  but this  issue  "FNU" is written  as first  name cause  the column for Surname  on  passport is Blank  and both First  and last names are written  under Given name.    Does anyone  knows  how long does it take to get to get the corrected on the passport in India?

It takes around a week after you attend the updatation for Passport at PSK. So apply under TATKAL for the same for expedious re-issue of your passport. You can take your updated passport to the interview and solve the FNU issue there.
