Hello all,

I am a little confused about the next steps. My wife arrived on Cr1 on April 14. We checked to have an SS assgined on DS230. My questions are - How long on average before the green card arrives? Do I need to go to SS office to apply for an SS or it will be automatically sent?

Any answer will be highly appreciated.

For GC give it a month to arrive (make sure your wife's name on the mail box). For SS number, if she had not had one before wait two weeks then if nothing comes to your address go to the nearest SS office with (passport stamped with I-551, birth certificate, marriage certificate) and have them do a new one.

Hey,

Thanks for the reply. One observation, I don't know whether this is new. Her passport was not stamped with I-551. Only arrival stamp with her case number from NVC. Any one know whether that is common..

My wife arrived on March 30th and she received her Social Security card within 7 days which was a bit of a surprise. We are still waiting on the Green Card. My understanding is that is supposed to arrive within 3 weeks which would be April 20th for us.

Officers at the POE no longer give I-551 stamps. They DO endorse the new MRIVs (Machine Readable Immigrant Visa) which are the visa type pasted into the passport (all of them, currently).

Back when the DAH came, the visa was a separate document on the outside of the Mysterious Brown Envelope:

oh bum, I can't find a photo of an MRIV right now.

My husband had to go to the S.S. office... When we were there, they said they have never heard of people receiving it because they checked it on the DS 230.

Possibly because people who receive it automatically via checking the box never have a reason to go to that office to complain.

Checking the DS-230 boxes worked for us, receiving the card automatically within about two weeks after entry. My very unscientific gut feel, based on watching VJ'ers comments on this issue over the past couple of years, is that it probably works somewhere between 70-95% of the time. I'm sure it's not 100% reliable, because I've heard plenty of stories of failures, but I've heard a lot more success stories.
