Ok that doesn't answer the question I just posted. I asked if I need to send in a letter explaining why we had to file an adjustment.

I would personally send a cover letter to explain the situation. I know for my original filing, I wrote one long letter and if I do get an RFE or such, I know I will be doing the same again. It doesn't cost anything to try to explain and that way you have covered all posts.

they don't care why it was adjusted as long as they have the most recent one. you can simply say here are our revised taxes.

My thing is, will they even know that my husband didn't file as married in the first place, he does have an adjustment but will they really dig that deep into it to find out why the return was adjusted? I feel that its better to be safe then sorry though. So I will probably just write a letter of explanation

Well I have a complicated situation with my husband, that I find rather personal and I didn't want to go into such vast detail regarding it to them, but if they send me an RFE or for an interview, which I am expecting, I will then have to divulge our personal circumstances.  I understand that they want to protect against fraud, I get that, but there is a very fine line, I feel when they ask questions that you would rather keep to yourselves. I know my marriage is valid, my husband knows it is, but they tend to treat every case the same, giving their checklists and if you can't provide all they want then there are warning bells. For example I don't want my husband to have medical power of attorney. I don't want my husbands life insurance as he has two children, one in the Navy, one at college. Who am I to take all he has worked for to provide for his children. I just want enough if anything happened to him to bury him. At the same time I don't want him having my pension benefits if I die, as that was always for my son, for his student loan or to buy a house, so I know he is ok if anything happens to me. I am not on any of the bills, there is a reason for that but its personal.  So yeah I expect an interview and I shall tell them what they want to know if I really have too.
