Traveling to Canada without physical green card

Hi.. I'm a Philippines passport holder planning to enter the US with my F1 immigrant visa on Sep 7.  On Sep 14, I'm planning to visit my brother's family in Toronto and will stay for two weeks.

As as per Canadian visa rules, I could enter Canada as long as I can show proof of status in the US (valid green card).  My question is would the endorsement be sufficient as proof or will a physical green card be necessary.  I haven't bought my ticket to Toronto yet since I'm not sure if Canada will allow me entry and US upon my return.

Your experience on this issue will be greatly appreciated.  Many thanks in advance.

Technically yes. However, the airlines may refuse to board you... I would normally say call the airline... But a representative on the phone might say one thing, and then another representative something completely different.

I would suggest you fly into Buffalo and drive into Canada. But yes you should not have a problem traveling to Canada with an I-551 stamp

I believe you need a eTA to fly into Canada. You can get it online and cost is $7 CA. As long as you have a green card you can apply for this visa. It is only if you are flying into Canada.

  • 2 weeks later...

I've gone to Canada with just RTD and I551 stamp. We were traveling by train. Canadian immigration didn't even bother to open the RTD. He saw the cover, and asked where we were going and for how long. Then after a few minutes of conversation about which type of suitcase was the most convenient (very random) he waved us through. Of course, YMMV.
