Quick question! :help:

Part 9. Time Outside the United States

1. How many total days (24 hours or longer) did you spend outside the United States during the last 5 years?

2. How many trips of 24 hours or longer have you taken outside the United States during the last 5 years?

3. List below all the trips of 24 hours or longer that you have taken outside the United States during the last 5 years.

I'm applying under the eligibility of "Having been a lawful permanent resident of the United States for at least 3 years, and my spouse has been a US citizen for the last 3 years at the time I filled my Form N-400".

Do I list all the days that I spent in the last 5 years (it means listing 2 years before I entered the US as a permanent resident) or just 3 years since I've become a permanent resident?  :huh2:

Just perusing other filers threads to compare stuff (I filed in July).

Since you are filing under the 3 year rule, list travel over the past 3 years only.

If you list further back before you even had the GC, then it will raise your total number of days considerably and make you look ineligible to apply for naturalization right off the bat ;) and at the very least, be confusing to the adjudicator reading your application.

Depending on how you answered the eligibility question at the beginning of the application, the adjudicator will realize that this section applies only to the previous three years, so be comforted by that :)

If you are applying through paper application, you can also cross out "5" and write in "3" if you want, lots of people have done that.

I got this via email:

You are fabulous!  :dance::dance::dance:

I think USCIS should have stated something like "in the last 5 years (or 3 years if your eligibility is Part 1. B)".

They could have a slightly different application for people who have been married to a US citizen for 3 years.  :dancing:

Related question:  :help:

Part 5. Information About Your Residence

Where have you lived during the last five years?

Part 8. Information About Your Employment and Schools You Attended

List where you have worked or attended school full time or part time during the last five years.

Should I list only the last 3 years of my residence and employment/school history so my citizenship officer doesn't assume I've been out of the US and am ineligible for citizenship?  :huh2:

With the residence, really they are more interested in your addresses within the USA.  However, for the purposes of the form it makes no difference whether those addresses have been within or outside the US---basically, they are trying to further determine the continuous residence criteria, as well as be aware of any other countries you may have lived in (and therefore done some less-than-wonderful things in) to assist background checks.  You should list the previous 5 year's worth.  Remember, only your more current addresses within the US will be used to determine your continuous residence eligibility.

Schools/Employment---listing all the countries/States you have been employed/educated in does nothing to hurt your application at all (unless you have been employed by certain groups)  so yes, you should list the previous 5 year's worth.

If you really wanted to, you can again cross out the 5 and put 3, as I have heard others do.

I'm amazed that USCIS doesn't make it easy for applicants applying under the eligibility of Part 1. B.!  :bonk:

I'd definitely put 5 years, whether that falls during your GC time or not. If they ask for 5, include 5, even if it doesn't make sense or doesn't seem relevant.
