This disaster of an oath ceremony is finally over.

What happened?

arent you a Seattle Filer?

For starters, our family pet died around 10PM the night before. Rushed him to the pet hospital where they said the only real option was euthanasia. So we didn't sleep at all that night and were out of bed around 4am because you can only roll around trying to sleep in between bouts of crying for long before you're wasting your time trying. Anyway...

8am ceremony. Arrived at 7:30, as requested. They had two lines. One for oath takers and one for family. After about 10 minutes in the line I get told that I was in the disabled peoples line and that the normal line was about 50 feet south at a different set of doors. However, the line was so long that it was actually faster to get to the end of the line by going the other direction because the line wrapped around the entire city block. There was some guy who was selling nicer folders for the certificates for $10. They looked okay so I got one. Why not. Except the "demo" certificate inside it... there's no way to get it out! There's no slit or anything. #######. So I just used a razor blade carefully once I got home.

After standing in the line for about two hours, and us only getting about half a block closer, they decide to tell all the oath takers to just go in and the families all had to wait in line. Once I got in, there were no signs at all. A whole bunch of lines of people checking in with numbers above them. I asked a woman (who was apparently head of USCIS for san diego) where to go and I got the "get in line" response. I asked "which line?" and she said "any line is fine" as if I had asked a stupid question.

So, I pick a line, wait about 5 minutes and then they look at my form, ask me the questions on the form, stamp it and punch holes in my PR card. They write a number on the form without telling me what it means and that was it. Then she said to go sit down.

I go to the nearest seat and get told that im in the wrong area and to go sit at the other side of the room. Again, I had no idea what the number meant on my form and there were no signs telling you where to go. So I go to the other side, get handed a package with a bunch of ####### in it I don't care about, and go sit down.

We sit and watch old people folk dancing for about 30 minutes. At about 10:30AM my wife texted me that she finally got inside. Nowhere for her to sit so she had to stand. About 11AM they start the ceremony. Judge rambles on and calls out each country, leaving Mexico for last since that's probably 3/4 of the people in the room. Then USCIS, Passport office, and social security people all drone on for a good 15 minutes. We stand for the anthem, we take the oath (I may or may not have "accidentally" omitted the god part even though I hadn't requested to... "oops") and thought in my head how amusing it was that there were 2000 people all with their hand in the air, as if that somehow guarantees they're telling the truth... Then more rambling. The USCIS woman drones on about her family history and what the flag means to her, blah blah. Then we get to watch a video by the cheeto in chief who seems to say nothing even though I could clearly see his mouth moving. Maybe that's something I've subconsciously taught myself to do, I don't know.

Then they start clearing us out row by row, which took a ridiculous amount of time. As it turns out, the number they wrote on our form is the number of the line we're supposed to go to to receive our certificates. Mine was 18. There was a short line for 17, and a long line for 19, and no line in front of the "18" sign. So I get in the 19 and wait. Then I figure the other one is shorter, I'll try it. I get to the front of the line quickly (only about 3 people were ahead of me) and I ask the guy if he is both 17 and 18. He says yes in such a way that I guess he thinks I should have somehow magically known that.

So I get my certificate and get the hell out of there. My wife had already left for the car so I met her there. On the way out I had somebody covered in republican pins and buttons asking me if I wanted some information to take home. I informed him that I was "not a racist a**hole" and kept walking.

So that's basically my experience with the oath ceremony. Apparently they do it here the last wednesday of every month. You would think if they did it that often it would make some amount of sense to put up... you know... signs... about where to go. Or at least have visibly identifiable people you could ask for directions or help.

I've traveled the world and consider myself to be a pretty well-informed person who can use common sense, and I still found this to be one of the most confusing and frustrating situations I've ever encountered. And that's something to be said for a person who has visited countries where I can't read, write or speak a word of their language and still managed to get around.

I'm just glad this ####### is over and I can put it all behind me. I just wish I had my best friend back.

Hello rovers when did you receive this update i also filed around the time you did from chicago and i have not received and in line update as yes.

Hi Bic,

I really don't know when the status was updated. I checked the status for the first time about a week ago. Slow down 😁, sooner or later our time for an interview and oath will come.

Happy Holidays,

My interview was on December 1st. I was approved and online status changed to placed in line for oath ceremony. However, I haven't heard anything from USCIS since then. What could be the possible reason for delay? I want to travel in February and want the oath ceremony done so that I have time to apply for passport.

That's only 21 days ago. You have to be patient with these things. It could potentially take 3 days, or it could take 3 months.

Scheduling travel is probably not a good idea, though you can travel outside of the US between your interview and oath as long as you declare it on your oath form and during check-in.

I appreciate your response. The wait time between interview and oath in my city is one month at most in pretty much all the cases that I have seen. But as my case isn't following the established pattern, it had me a little concern. I am hoping the delay is due to holidays and I will get my oath ceremony letter early next month.

Anyway...

Sorry to hear that your pet has passed away, especially the day before your citizenship day since that was supposed to be one of your happiest days!

To make things more interesting, I am going to be attending two friends' weddings and photographing one of them in Scotland in September 2018. Husband is at the LA office for his n-400 and we're still waiting on an interview date. Based on what I'm seeing for their processing times of that field office, and the 6-9 months it could take, we're looking at maybe April for an interview. I hope to wrap this all up by early summer so we can move over to the UK and be settled there before September. We're just waiting on the citizenship to move. I guess if it takes any longer, we might get stuck flying out to Scotland and then flying back here for the oath or something, but I really hope processing times don't slow down even further so we won't have to do that. Man, am I jealous of you all who have finished this process now!

If I apply for my UK visa before full completion of my husband's US citizenship, that's not going to mess anything up with this US process, is it? Once you've qualified under 3 years residency and have applied, you're allowed to move overseas even if interview and oath haven't completed yet (assuming you are back for those events)?

Should be fine since it’s not like USCIS would have any way of knowing you filed for a UK visa, but as always that would be better answered by an immigration lawyer.
