You are probably right. I got two pending cases going, 751 and 400. I took a chance to talk to a second tier immigration officer. It is puzzling. The officer told me they are looking into my 400 that is why my 751 is delayed which is obviously not true. He told me just wait for the 400, i might not even need my 10 year green card, so i said to him, you mean you may combine the two applications together, he said no, he said they are two different processes. I told him shouldn't 751 need to be approved first before they can go ahead and adjudicate 400, he said not necessarily. He said it is even better because i may not even need my 10 year green card, while it could be true if both were adjudicated at the same time, i would have the 10 year green card for a short period of time, but I have never heard 400 can just be approved without 751. Maybe the officers like him might be confused themselves...

It is rare, but I have found myself in one of those rare situations where I am applying for naturalization without a 751. Due to my spouse being employed overseas at the time of our marriage, and the rules on timelines for naturalization, I am able to apply for naturalization prior to the window of my 751 opening (90 days prior to GC expiration). As long as the naturalization is approved prior to the window for my 751 opening, I do not need to apply for a 751. I called USCIS twice and talked to two different people to confirm this. It's going to be close though and I'm not sure what will happen if the window opens after I already finished the interview but haven't taken the oath yet...crossing my fingers that the naturalization moves smoothly. 

 

Looking at your GC date, it doesn't seem like this is the same case with you though?  Especially if you already submitted the 751, I feel like they should just adjudicate them together, effectively removing the conditions and approving the naturalization concurrently. You are probably right, that is probably what the officer meant. They will schedule the interview, removing the conditions and then adjudicate my 400. We shall see, thanks for your info. Your case is so interesting, and probably a rare one. Good luck, I am sure you will be ok.

That's what I thought so I decided to send a paper application since I thought saving 5-15 days by filing online wasn't that important to me.

It's not like they have two separate pools of applicants and process one ahead of the other or anything. Online is just faster for some phases because its more efficient. 

 

And then there's me, using the San Diego field office which is probably one of the busiest in the country. Looking at timelines, it looks like 4-5 months is about standard time between biometrics and interview at this field office, so I fully expect my application to be a long process. 

Yes, I think the biggest factor that affects your N-400 application timeline is your field office!  

 

You may get an interview quickly if your field office is not busy or backed-up.

I might go to the Seattle field office on Friday since it looks like I have some time on Friday.

Did your online status change when you received the Biometric appt? I am waiting for my biometric appointment to be scheduled but I'm not sure if it's going to happen by mail or it also changes the online status? I filed my N400 by mail (traditional way)  as well.

Arrived about 9.15am was out by 9.45am really quick.

Sent: Date N-400 was mailed to USCIS.
Cashd: Date your check was cashed / credit card was charged by USCIS.
NOA: Receipt Notice Date Printed on your official I-797 notification.
Fprints:  Date assigned for fingerprinting (Bio-metrics). If you do your biometrics via walk-in prior to your scheduled appointment, please enter the date in bold blue.
In Line: Date you received e-notification about the start of your interview scheduling.
Int Ltr: Date you received the official letter in the mail regarding interview.
Interview: Date of your interview.
Oath: Date Oath taken.

Field Office: Your local USCIS office where you will have the N-400 interview.
