For the purposes of tracking, if you have "interview scheduled" but dont have a date, you're "in line", because that's still a step beyond where the "biometrics complete" people are at.

 

And yeah, generally the site you track with your case # is pretty worthless.

So I guess online filing does not necessarily mean faster interview date or getting ahead of others or being approved quickly, it might still go through the regular procedure like the traditional paper filing. Interesting.

Generally it seems to, which isn’t surprising. There are always exceptions.

Just wanted to add that if your biometrics appointment letter says, for example, 10:00 am you don't have to wait until 10:00 before they will see you.  This was true in Seattle, at least.  Also, in Seattle, save yourself the $7 cash parking charge and drop off your applicant at the load/unload only spot and pick them

up there again when they come out in 15 minutes.  So much better an experience than paying to hike up that hill only to see your applicant coming out the door when you arrive, lol.

Question. E notification obviously gives you a detailed report on your progress. For those of us who didn't sign up for E notification. Can we call USCIS' what so called tier 2 officers and find out more detail like what E notification can tell us?

I doubt it, but you may be able to make an infopass appointment. You can also enable text/email alerts on the case tracking site, though those aren't anywhere near as detailed.

I agree. The only advantages I've got from online filling are more frequent case status updates( some of them are redundant or useless) and early pdf version of notice letter online ( doesn't really matter). Other than those, online filling certainly won't expedite the background check (I am sure FBI don't care how you filed). Field office might pick a couple of online filers to cut in line for interview for testing purposes but I don't see all of them are that lucky.

N-400 Timeline San Francisco field office (Marriage with an US citizen and 3 year of LPR):

08/22/2017 (day 007): Biometrics appointment was scheduled for 9/8/2017 

08/28/2017 (day 013): Early walk-in biometrics was completed

01/03/2018 (day 141): Interview appointment was scheduled for 2/6/2018

02/06/2018 (day 175): Interview was completed and the case was recommended for approval

02/12/2018 (day 181): Oath ceremony was scheduled for 3/15/2018

03/15/2018 (day 214): Oath ceremony was competed and I am an US citizen!

Exactly. In reality it just expedites the process itself. Time between filing and NOA is shorter (cutting out USPS...), time between NOA and biometrics is shorter because... well... theres no paper to push around. Once you complete biometrics its pretty much the same for everyone. 

 

It's not like they have two separate pools of applicants and process one ahead of the other or anything. Online is just faster for some phases because its more efficient. 

 

And then there's me, using the San Diego field office which is probably one of the busiest in the country. Looking at timelines, it looks like 4-5 months is about standard time between biometrics and interview at this field office, so I fully expect my application to be a long process.
