Hi Everyone

I just wanted to asked if do you need to take your last name as your middle name when you get married here in US? I have come here with the k1 visa and was married months ago and i got my green card just last week but i noticed that my middle name in the card was my maiden name. I am a filipino and normally you take your last name (your father's surname) to be your middle name when you get married so you will take your spouse's Last name. But what happened in my situation is that In my green card they put my maiden name (my mother's surname) as my middle name so i lost my last name. ex: full name is Alecia Vega Ebal (unmarried).. After marriage Alecia Vega Kolm... So i lost my father's surname and take my maiden name as my middle name now. I dont want to correct the error if it doesnt require because of the long process. My question is, Is this legal? If so will i might be having difficulty to renew, banking and paperwork process afterwards?

Making your pre marriage last name your middle name after marriage is not a requirement or a tradition in the US , from what I have seen it is a requirement in the Philippines so you might want to check with the Philippines sub forum if not having this change will be an issue if you need to deal with any authorities in the Philippines in the future like getting a new passport.

For example Elizabeth Mary Smith when marrying Mr Brown becomes Elizabeth Mary Brown not Elizabeth Smith Brown. She could become Elizabeth Mary Smith-Brown but she would not lose her middle name Mary

I am kind of in the same situation as you. My problem is my middle name (my father's name) is part of my first name or given name. I sent my green card back to USCIS to have it corrected. I have been waiting for 2 months already. They said it will take 9 months. It has been hard for me since I can't get my social security number unless my details on immigration is corrected.

That is why i will just gonna use what is written on my green card. Instead of using my fathers last name as my middle name i just have to deal using my mum's last name as what they put in my green card. I just cant wait that long to get the correction done. For as long as i wont be having trouble in the future with my new name is all fine with me
