My wife tried to set up an infopass appointment to get a stamp in her passport, even though her letter doesn't expire until October. She's going to visit family for a couple weeks, and she thought a stamp would be more "secure" than the letter (even though she's used the letter before with no problems). Anyway, she received a call from USCIS today saying she couldn't get a stamp until a month or less before the expiration date of the letter.

This is for the San Francisco USCIS office. Just thought I'd share this info.

I know but does that indicate your place in line? cause I saw someone said no chance of hearing anything anytime soon due to their number...it got me confused.

Yes, in a way. The first two number indicate the fiscal year your application was accepted and then the third, fourth, and fifth numbers indicate which day your NOA was. My first 5 numbers are 17305, which means my NOA was August 1, 2017. The last 5 numbers actually indicate your place in line on your NOA date, not that it matters since USCIS doesn't go in order 🙄

Is this something wrong ? or normal process ?

That happens sometimes, you may have an approval or RFE coming your way soon.

My husband's go with extension letter expires on 09/12, just over a month away. I tried to do an online inquiry but it wont allow me because the notice date is in August 2017 and they are only allowing inquiries on dates in April 2017 or earlier.  Should we wait it out or be proactive in getting an appointment?

I'd try to make an infopass appointment now. Some USCIS offices, such as the one in San Francisco, don't allow you to make an appointment, but instead they request info about your case (such as when your letter expires, if you have an immediate need, etc) and say they'll call you.

I actually went two steps further, drove 300+ miles to an office that had infopass availability in upstate NY only to be told that I can't get a stamp till one week before the expiration of my GC + Extension. Mine expires at the end of October and I wanted it to apply for a Schengen Visa... I should've checked in here before I went on my expedition.. Good to know now! :)
