I was intrigued and a did quick google search - apparently their constitution was amended in 2012 to allow dual citizenship

Hi- geez, thanks for the info! I had been searching online for the past few years and saw nothing about the 2012 amendment - this definitely changes everything! By any chance do you know how you would go about applying to be a US citizen and retaining your original citizenship? Would this require a lawyer? Now I’ll be on the lookout on other message boards- thanks again for finding this info out!

I can’t speak specifically for Haiti, but if it’s anything like it is for the UK, basically as I understand it, it goes like this:

 

I become US citizen, and the US no longer recognizes me as a UK citizen - only a US citizen.

The UK continues to recognize me as only a UK citizen. Neither country recognizes that you are a citizen of the other, but also neither country makes you officially renounce your citizenship, which it appears Haïti did before 2012.

Can't you move jobs with the restricted SS card, the expired green card, and the I-797?

Hi my husband just got a new job yesterday and used his expired green card and extension letter as proof of legality to work in the US and had no problem. FYI his SS card still has restrictions on it as well.

That's good to know! I've just been reading some horror stories of HR departments not accepting the extension letter. Hopefully, that won't be the case for me. Thanks for the helpful info.

Not sure! Works for some, doesn't work for others apparently... But i'm staying hopeful.

If you have any problems, just refer them to the I9 handbook as it clearly states the I-797 is acceptable!

7.1 Lawful Permanent Residents (LPR)

Employees must be allowed to choose which document(s) they will present from the Lists of Acceptable Documents. You cannot specify which document(s) an employee must present. Employees who attest to being an LPR in Section 1 may choose to present a List A document (such as a Permanent Resident Card, Form I-551) or a List B and List C document combination (such as a state-issued driver’s license and unrestricted Social Security card). If the employee presents a List A document, do not ask or require the employee to present List B and List C documents. If an employee presents List B and List C documents, do not ask or require the employee to present a List A document.

The combination of an expired Permanent Resident Card and a Form I-797, Notice of Action, that indicates that the card is valid for an additional year, is an acceptable List C evidence of employment authorization for one year as indicated on Form I-797. At the end of the one-year period, you must reverify.

My wife has changed jobs a couple times since getting her extension letter. Hasn't had any problems with HR departments.
