I am trying to understand this new bill for "immigration reform" and the point system they are trying to create better.  I am told that this bill, if it becomes a law, will not affect people who are trying to obtain the immigration benefits based on marriage, but some people are disagreeing with that... and are saying that it will affect everyone including people who are applying for green cards for their spouses.

If this bill is passed, and it becomes the law of the land, will this new law affect the removal of conditions process of a 2-year conditional green card to become a 10-year permanent green card for someone who is married to a us citizen and has currently a conditional 2-years green card?  Will it affect obtaining the citizenship after completing the 3 years of having a green card?

Thanks everyone!

The immigration reform will not affect spouses of US citizens. It is mainly going to affect employment based green card petitions, and non-immediate relatives of US citizens.

From what I read on ABC, they may remove parents from the immediate relative classification, so not sure if we will be able to file for them anymore.

Again we don't really know what will happen, and I wouldn't worry about it if I were you. Spouses of US citizens are very unlikely to be affected. Also... Bipartisan congressional approval for the bill in the senate is fairly slim, even from Republicans like Lindsey Graham... So I really would not worry about it if I were you

I don't think it will affect visas for spouses, as that takes freedom of marrying the person you love, however from what I can make out and I might be wrong, is that it will limit the amount of family members the subsequent spouse can petition for to come over. I think they will be allowed to sponsor parents and minor children, but not the extended family including  their children over 21.

Thank you both for the replies.  I hope that you are right that it won't affect spouses or that it won't make it any longer or harder to finish up the whole process.

The first lady is.  But, he seems to forget that... He seems to expect of others what he does not expect of himself or his own family on many levels.

That's how I worded mine too.

I did not include Attn I-751 on the box... I did, however, include a nice cover sheet at the top of my package that was titled Form I-751 Petition to Remove Conditions on Lawful Permanent Residence

Department of Homeland Security
