Thought I would share this...

I made an info-pass appointment at the Chicago office about two weeks ago. When I went up to the window to register the officer handling the registrations asked me why I'm here...so I let him know that I was hoping to get the I-551 stamp in my passport. He told me that I will not get it and that he is not forwarding my registration - thus, my appointment and day off work was for nothing. I asked why and the only answer I got was that I have to come back within 1 week of my extension letter expiring...

This officer sounds quite petty... I got my I-551 stamp well over a month before my letter expired, I did explain that I was about to travel for work right around the expiration date of my 12-month letter and they asked if I am sure I don't want to wait til I'm closer to the expiration date. I said I don't because I want to make sure I have no trouble re-entering the US after the trip, and they stamped my passport without further questions. This was also in Chicago, but back in July.
Sorry you had to waste your time going to the field office  :( Maybe it depends on the officer? Unless they changed the rules about when one can request their I-551...

On a good note, I received my i797 in the mail! So thank G-d out of the two contradicting statuses I got on https://myaccount.uscis.dhs.gov/ (one for RFE, one for Card being produced) the correct one was about the card produced and then Case approved! I'm a CSC filer transferred to TSC on 10/10.

Good luck to everyone! ❤️

That’s weird and some crazy local office policy or officer there.

I got a i-551 stamp two months earlier before my extension letter expires in Dallas  and have been traveling in and out of the country with.

Question, with an RFE, are you supposed to sent original documents or copies? I will be sending my son’s birth cert, but not sure if I should send the original or a copy. Thanks

Might be my Russian background, but I would not want to ever send originals to anyone. From what I know, USCIS does not return any original documents to you, so def would send a copy of the birth certificate.
Might be a good idea to stop by your nearest UPS to certify the copy with the notary public.
