I'd strongly advise against wearing a "flag" shirt. US Flag Code indicates flag should never be worn as apparel; while it is unlikely an officer would raise Flag code issue during interview, according to said code it is considered "not treating the flag with respect".

Really? Americans wear that stuff all the time to show how patriotic they are!

If it's anything like the London embassy then they won't be able to see much of your shirt. I am 5ft tall exactly and only my head and shoulders were in view to the officer through the window. I wore a dress but I regularly wear dresses. It was a wool winter dress with tights because mine was in London in December. One man was there in painter's coveralls with paint splatters all over. The woman whose interview was before mine was in a very ugly Christmas sweater!

I definitely wouldn't wear wear anything with a flag or an American slogan on it. Bear in mind the decision whether to grant you a visa or not has most likely been all but made before you arrive. Your appearance on the day and your composure is probably just to confirm the officer's decision.

And they decide even before the interview?? That sounds a bit unfair.

unfair yes, but yeah, i do think this is true. they have already made some sort of a decision before you even arrive and and the interview is i think mostly just to confirm the decision.

Of course they do. And if you look up US Flag code you'll discover there are no legal penalties for breaking it - it is really just a set of guidelines.

But I don't think I need to tell you that there's a profound and fundamental difference between an American and someone who's trying to get visa, green card or citizenship. The first one doesn't have to pass any scrutiny, judgement or interviews. The other one, on the other hand, should really do everything possible to stack the deck in their favor, even in minutiae such as not appearing disrespectful to the US flag, regardless of intent.

If someone at the embassy is going to take offense they need to be super duper patriotic then because Americans, American stores etc disrespect the flag every day according to the US Flag. It would be disrespectful if she wore an actual flag but she is not.

She has decided not to wear it (read page 1 if you missed it)
