I see there are many threads about this so I apologize in advance if this has been addressed- I see a lot about the marketplace but not employer-based.

I was recently offered insurance through my job and my old insurance will lapse August 1. My husband hasn't received a SSN yet. How does it work? Our marriage is the qualifying event but the insured period antedates our marriage. Is getting a green card a qualifying event? Thanks <3

ssn is not required for insurance in any way. they just like it because it is easy. I have been able to get insurance for my step child with just the i94 number with no issues. green card is a qualifying event but why wait and have to pay the tax penalties just because hr doesn't know the rules.

I did ask my hr person why they want it and it is to check if the person is covered under medicare so they don't have to cover them.

The best answer is to call your HR department. But my HR said that my husband doesn't need a SS to enrolled on my insurance :)
