Sworn affidavits are generally not useful but they can be signed before a Notary.  If you live together abroad, evidence of time spent together in person is many times as effective as any affidavit from a third party.  Affidavits are really a last resort, and tend to make the couple look more desperate than genuine.

Affidavits are really useless, or harmful in most cases.  The exception would be when somebody was actually witness to the evolution of your relationship and can describe what they observed over time.  People whose exposure to the couple consists primarily of attending a party or ceremony, don't really know anything about the relationship.  It would be better for the petitioner to simply write a letter describing the evolution of the relationship.  (Not an affidavit, just a signed letter.)
