I have heard similar.  The consulate will certainly be able to read russian and ukrainian.  Some of our docs were also in polish, so we just went ahead and had certified translations done of everything to be on the safe and thorough side.  It's relatively inexpensive to have done in Ukraine.

I recommend getting all the necessary documents translated.  Even though the US Embassy in Russia web sites states that documents in Russian do not need to be translated, people that have gone through interviews in past were asked for document translations.  I think it is probably the same for US Embassy in Ukraine.  It is easy to get done, and better safe than sorry.

 

To make it easier for my fiance, she sent me copies of the documents and I found a certified Russian translator here in the states that quickly got it done.  

 

I plan on being at the interview, whenever that happens...
