Urgent Help on Temporary GC after divorce!!

also just to give a bit of background, we met in ny and both had similar finance careers, she insisted on moving to Austin as she was bought up there, so I quit my job and moved there to start a new life together as nyc is the right place to bring up a family. anyways what was supposed to be a short term situation living in her family house turned into a lengthy time for various reasons hence no utility bills.

 CC statements wouldn't be helpful unless the card was in both of your names.

 

I know you lived in her family home, but did you make any large purchases together?  Like appliances, or furniture...invoices for those purchases showing both your names?

we definitely made purchases together but it doesn't have both of our names on them. could you guide me in terms of what documents to file like i751 and stuff like that.

Judging from your post, you only filed taxes jointly in 2016, the year you got divorced?!?!?! What about 2014 and 2015?

He did state a few posts into the thread that he filed the 2014 and 2015 ones.  In his OP he said he filed the 2016 ones.

The tax info is confusing, though, as it comes out in pieces bit by bit...

The i-751 is the only form you have to fill out.

You do have to submit documents along with your application proving the marriage was a bonafide relationship.  The instructions infront of the form lists possible items you can send along with your package.

actually that was a typo of 2016. 2014 was filed jointly and so was 2015. for 2016 we filed separately.

Make sure you keep proof of your tax filings for each year.

yea I have all that, it was done online so its all saved, I was going through my ccard statements and had amazon purchases for things like grills etc delivered to our address so I guess I will add that, I also spoke with the counselor and thankfully he still remembers us and hes stated that hes willing to give his statement. I have some other things like congratulatory letters from the then governer Perry and pictures with the local congressman at the wedding ceremony. don't know if that will help but I guess the more proof the better it is.

the congressman did, the governers rep was there, gave us a letter on behalf of perry, also had a flag flown at the capitol in dc in our honor, got that flag and letter a couple of months after our marriage, I guess it doesn't get more official that that. lol. honestly when things don't work out it hurts both parties but were both good friends now also, she just informed me today that she can write a statement on my behalf too so theres no ill will. also now that I'm back in nyc my centre will change, you know how long the wait time is for the interview which I assume ill probably get called for in my case? also do u suggest a lawyer, I feel like the i751 (I filled it out already) is pretty straight forward? I paid 5k last time for the attorney and it felt like I wasted mone.

To hire a lawyer just to fill out a form when you read and understand English perfectly well to answer the questions asked on it seems like a waste of money to me.  You yourself just said you feel the form is pretty straight forward.  It is up to yo, though, whatever you feel comfortable with.

Some people don't get called for an interview for ROC at all, and the new GC is mailed to them.  Considering your visa, and considering your divorce chances are you will be called in for an interview.  Timeline until an interview seems to be 4 to 6 months on average after the initial filing, according to what I've seen mentioned here and elsewhere.  Could be longer or shorter---each case is individual, naturally.
