Fun With Phone Calls -- Some POE EA stamp info

This afternoon C. and I did some calling of POEs between the U.S. and Canada and here is what we learned, in brief:

1) Detroit land crossing is one place where the EAD stamps are.

2) The left hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing.

In more detail:

Based on the info from mozplay, we decided to begin calling POEs to see if they'd offer stamps. We started with Detroit, and a very pleasant man told C. that yes, of course they'd give the stamp, in fact all crossings that process K-1s would give out the stamps, and that we just need to be insistent if they wouldn't.

So, we called Sweetgrass next to confirm, as that is where we would like to cross. No, they said, we're not authorized to give out stamps. C. said, "But Detroit said..." The nice man got his supervisor who confirmed that they weren't authorized to give out EA stamps, and that the K-1 wasn't work authorized until they filed to adjust status.

Ha, I say. So we next call Grand Portage. They can't give out the stamp, either, they say, but they do say that the K-1 is authorized, it's just that, so we were told, they and Detroit are being administered by different departments at the moment, one USCIS and one DHS. I'm taking that to mean that Detroit is just bigger with more immigration-trained personnel, and so has to the staff to handle the request for the stamp, as I think USCIS is technically under the jurisdiction of Homeland these days. So Detroit thinks 'everyone should be like us' and everyone else says 'but we don't have the volume to keep someone qualified in the regulations on staff.'

No one answered the phone at the Peace Bridge number.

C. plans to call tomorrow to try to get a different person and see if he gets the same answer. :) Many thanks to mozplay and others for the linky goodness. I figured I'd post this here as an FYI.

So let me get this straight..

Since you now have your approved K1 Visa, if you were to fly through to Detroit, you would get the EA stamp and then be able to work technically for 90 days?

and then more paperwork, right? (I-765?)

Negative grasshopper!! One would clear USA immigration from at a Cdn Airport prior to ur arrival at the detroit Airport. They are talking about land crossings

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

If you fly, you always clear U.S. customs in the Canadian airport. This is for the Detroit land crossing -- we're planning on driving.

Moz, I haven't had any luck finding Sarnia; which state/province?

The employer won't care, but who knows if the employer will be ready on our timetable? :)

........going west on the 401,grab the 402 at London.......45- 50 mins you'll be in Sarnia. After crossing stay straight and you'll merge onto I-69/I-94.I forget where you're heading but I-94 will take you to Ohio and I-69 will head toward Illinois

forgot to mention.....no service centers after the woodstock center and nothing off the 402

Not that the Peace Arch in BC/WA would be an option for you but when I called there the nice lady I spoke to said she had never heard of the stamp. She was even nice enough to put me on hold and consult with (what she told me) were 2 superiors.

So hence no stamp at Peace Arch.
