Hi, I've already posted a couple of times on here but thought it was time to properly introduce myself!

My name's Sarah, I'm 24 and live in Ely, England! My husband is Jesse, he's 26 and is from the twin cities, Minnesota! We met through mutual friends on my last night of a holiday in September 2005, since then I've been to Minneapolis 5 more times and Jesse has been here 3. He proposed to me April 2006 and we got married on the 10th March this year.

He's working in downtown Minneapolis whereas I am just finishing a teaching degree over here (1 month left!) so we figured it made more sense for me to move to USA, at least to start off with. He's sending off our I-130 this week and we're getting ourselves ready for the long haul.....

I look forward to asking for plenty of advice over the next few months!!

Another quick question.... I'm going to visit Jesse for two months in May and June this year and want to drive. I'm just going to drive Jesse's car. Does anyone know what I'll need to do about insurance?

Hi! Welcome to VJ!

About the auto insurance...coverage generally follows a vehicle rather than a driver, so you shouldn't need to purchase any additional coverage. You should have Jesse contact his insurance company to verify that his policy does not have any exclusions.

Hi! Welcome to VJ!

About the auto insurance...coverage generally follows a vehicle rather than a driver, so you shouldn't need to purchase any additional coverage. You should have Jesse contact his insurance company to verify that his policy does not have any exclusions.

Dittos to jenn.. also, you might be able to have Jesse add you to his auto insurance policy--tell him to slip into the unknown tongue when they start asking for SS# etc--just say that you do not yet live in the US but are licensed in the UK (if you are). My insurance co was great about this, others may be less so.

See about getting added to any credit card accounts he's got too, as an authorized user. This will jump start a credit record for you, even without a SS# (my experience).

Have a great visit this summer!

Wow, thanks for all the advice!! That's really helpful! I've given Jesse the message about the insurance company so we'll just see what they say. Thanks also for the idea about the credit cards... We've added me to his normal bank account but hadn't thought about credit cards. If he has bad credit does that mean I'd inherit it?

Thanks to everyone who has taken the time to say hi. It's nice to know there are so many friendly people about!

Here's a good article with sound financial stuff: http://britishexpats.com/forum/showthread.php?t=435359 (follow the links). I'm not sure what to tell you about the bad credit question--no one ever thought an "authorized user" would benefit as much as we've seen either.

Maybe you'll help him improve his!

One thing you could look into is ordering Jesse's free annual credit report (not from the website of that name) and make sure any errors or old items are removed. Sometimes credit cards that *you* consider closed (as in, you cut the thing up, mailed it back with a letter saying 'drop dead' etc) is still actually open and reporting. Creidt scoring is crazy here, but many, many daily life things depend on it. Since you've got time to plan ahead... my advice is, focus on everything else *but* the immigration. There is WAY more to moving than the visa, and the visa *will* come.

Welcome to VJ, and Congrats on your wedding,

There are lot of valuable information here in VJ, and of course in all medium you will find others that can get on your nerves or post that can be offensive to others, but look at the general population as One family who is there to support each other in that uscis visa process. Good luck

Welcome to VJ.

As a point of correction, Insurance may follow the car, but if you live at the same residence you need to be listed as a driver. Being that you have experience as a driver the rates will not be the highest. but it will likely add to the premiums.
