I find it hard finding things that I've never used in the UK.

Corn Starch! I didn't know if it was a liquid, solid etc or where it would be. I ended up calling my mother in law and asking her.

I now take Dave with me, he's used to deciphering my shopping list when I write mince, washing up liquid and bin bags!

Cornstarch in the US is called corn flour in the UK. I went to the store to get some and didn't see cornstarch so I got cornflour and figured it would be the same thing. Lucky me I guessed correctly. Normally if I couldn't find something I would describe it to my fiance's mom and she could usually tell me what it was called there.

Life is a ticket to the greatest show on earth.

In my experience most Americans love anything with cheese or peanut butter!

Often together!

Sweet and salty is common too. My hubby adores stuff like that.

Oh. My. God. Those little orange "cheese" crackers with "peanut butter" sandwiched in between... Bliss...

I never used to be able to find anything in my local M&S food hall and it was about 1/10 of the size of yer average Walmart -- I figured out the reason stuff was more expensive there was because they used to employ people to move stuff around all the time.

I'mma chime in here with two different points....

I use a home remedy when I'm really sick to my stomach. I eat a teeny spoonful of baking soda & wash it down with water. It's gross and nasty, but usually (no word of a lie) I'm feeling better within 60 seconds. It's really fantastic. When I was in the UK, they didn't have the yellow Arm & Hammer box I'm used to  and nothing said 'baking soda' so I was like '#######?' the store at the time was apparantly out of bicarbonate, and the only thing I saw was 'baking powder' so I thought 'eh, it's called powder here'

WHAT A MESS!!! I was doubled over in pains

_______________________________________

On another tangent, I have to say that from my perspective...I had a great time living in the UK. I didn't go over there thinking it would be the same, and I realized everything I was giving up to go there. So I took each experience as it came. There were some things I didn't like, MANY things I missed, I had loads of guilt for leaving my family (we're exceptionally close and I'm also an only child)...basically, there was a hell of an adjustment period. But no place is perfect...and how amazing is it to be able to experience life in a culture not your own? I have to say that I think part of it has to do with attitude and the people who you are around. I had the occassional azzhole try to hold me responsible for 'the big ole evil USA' but after sitting down and talking to them, we were able to get to a nice & mutually respectful place. But all of the people we lived around were very supportive and wonderful & I have to say that no one treated me like I was an outsider or made me feel like I had to defend my country. I am a VERY proud American and it would not bode well with me if people were slagging off the USA! And other than that occassional know it all, every other person I came in contact with was very inquisitive and interested in hearing about what life was like where I'm from.

I know I'm rambling here, and I can absolutely understand homesickness. And HA has been there for twice the length I was there, but I felt compelled to chime in to show another perspective that not all experiences living abroad in the UK is met with hostility.

Ironically, mags was just expressing the same feeling that HA has expressed.....stop slagging off my country! lol

Anyone remember this episode of Kath & Kim..

Kim: Here's your statue, Mum.

Kath: Oh, what for the love of God is that?

Kim: It's the statue you wanted.

Kath: What? No it's not, Kim.

Kim: Yes it is, it's a statue of little baby cheeses.

Kath: Little baby cheeses? Oh little baby *Jesus*, Kim, *Jesus*.

[Exasperated]

Kath: Oh, Jesus

In Britain this remedy is usually sold in little cans under the name "Andrews" or to give it its full name "Andrews Liver Salts".

Exactly! I love the USA, I love being here...but I also love the country I was born and grew up in for 33 years and get rather miffed when people (not necessarily just HA here) slag it off. As does any USC when similar stuff is said about the USA. USCs are not the only patriotic countrymen/women! ;)

The other point I wish to make is that life is WAY too short. Homesickness is nasty, I'll admit that, but rather than wishing away your time in the UK, embrace it, live it, enjoy it, it is part of your life you will never get back again. It is also part of your husband and his way of life. Don't wish it away because you want to be somewhere else. Just my 0.02c.

When I first came here I used to encounter ####### all the time that would have a go at me for Britain's "occupation of Ireland", some would get quite agressive about it as well. So its not just in the UK you have to deal with this. I think dealing with people's ignorance of other cultures is a big part of moving to a foriegn country. If you can educate a few people about the reality of things, then that can only be a good thing.
