Woo hoo! Glad to hear that! I think your bureaucratic woes are coming to an end as soon as you receive your greencard. At least they'll be over for another 2 years (minus 90 days). ;)

OH yeah.. I have noticed a Marked change in my ability to sleep at nights.. back to falling asleep on a dime and struggling to get out of bed for work in the am!! LOVE that I can sleep again! :)

Our EI claim was approved and the first payment was issued yesterday.....hopefully we have it by week's end. It will be a 6 week journey from the time we started the claim to having the first check in hand. We're ecstatic...my husband (USC) is a teacher, so these first few months without me being able to work are really going to be tough for us. The EI will make all the difference. If there are other K1s out there....it's definitely possible!

  • 1 month later...

Just wanted to bump this thread since there is some really good info in here for anyone going to be filing for EI anytime soon.

I was one of the lucky ones who didn't have to wait long to be approved for EI and had Maureen call me to confirm some things. My claim was suspended on May 6, 2007 when my I-94 expired, but I received my approval for AOS on June 18 so I started actively looking for work again on the 19th.

I called the 1-800 number for the Out of Canada Claims office to find out what they needed. I faxed the stuff that was required and didn't see any changed on my online file or receive a phone call, so I called again to confirm that they had in fact received my fax.

I actually got a call from someone at the Kingston office and she said that they had looked for the documentation that I had faxed but couldn't find it. She then proceeded to just do my 'report' cards over the phone, and to have me re-fax my documents to her at the Kingston office.

Great I thought, that's all over and done with. Yeah, right. Checking my online case, it states that they have received new information, blah blah blah, decision by July 22. but no moolah.

I'm thinking I'm going to call and find out what's going on. I mean, come on...I've provided proof that I'm eligible to work, I was already approved before, so what's the holdup??? :bonk:

Ok...rant over :content:

Hmmmmmm... they were slow in approving my file, but then once I was approved and I recieved my EAD card - I faxed it in and also mailed a copy with an explainatory letter. It didn't take long at all for them to send funds (like a week). You keep referring to Kingston - do you mean Belleville? Just wanted to make sure you are talking to the right person (the proof needs to be sent to Belleville just like the first submission) forgive me if i've misunderstood!

And I agree.. keep on them.. That online date system they have is automatically generated, and I don't think the office really tries to go with that. :P Which is silly, cause i would have called them a lot less had the information on the website been more accurate!! :)

Oh, I know that the Out of Canada Claims office is in Belleville, but for some reason, after calling Belleville, I received a call back from someone in Kingston (I think she was covering or helping out with Belleville...her name was Mrs. Laporte). I told her exactly what I had faxed and she had asked who told me to send it, and I said Maureen at the Belleville office...she seemed a bit more friendly and helpful once I said that.

I'm not even sure if I should call this Mrs. Laporte back, or just call Belleville.

I guess I'll try Belleville first! I'll let you know how it turns out! :)

UGH.. so sounds like they are doing vacation coverage or something.. Perhaps if you have access to a scan you could offer to e-mail the document to her, pretty sure all gov workers have e-mail? I dunno.. just trying to think of other ways to get it to this lady in Kingston :)

Well, this Mrs. Laporte had given me her fax number, and my husband faxed everything to her. He got the confirmation back, and then my online case updated that day.

I just sent back the next reporting cards the other day.

I just don't understand why it would take so long to re-instate my claim since I was already approved and have sent what they need...oh wait! I forgot, it's the government!

Ha ha!! it probably doesn't take long to update your claim.. it's the fact that you need a real live person to work on it.. THat's what takes the time!! I just kept on them, and called every week (when I was trying to get the claim approved). The last time I called I'm SURE they just pulled out my paperwork and gave me the approval to keep me from calling :) hee hee

I do have a question as well.. if anyone knows.. say you get a job in the US, and then are laid off from it.. but your EI claim hasn't expired (just haven't been claiming cause you were employed).. could you re-open the claim again? Dunno if i'm asking the right question, but i know EI has an "expiry" so if you become unemployed in the US before that time, could you re-open the claim?
