Just one concealed carry authorized person could've saved countless lives today.

exactly. but instead, like sheep, some on here will bleat "guns.....baaaaaaaaaaaaaaad"

You can't really blame them seeing as firearms were the cause of the deaths, and that the guy wouldn't have been successful if he had turned up with a knife or a club.

Guerrilla tactics is far more effective than man power! ^_^

I know because of the Vietnam War. The US have far more firepower, however, the Vietnamese ambush and guerrilla techniques was a very good defense. I think we can use ambushing to defend in civil order too. Just a thought.

with the doors locked, i'd not bet that he would not have been as successful. he had time.

I carry a gun because a cop is too heavy.

More weapons in more hands in more places. Absolutely. That's the solution.

I don't know what it is about the US - this sort of thing seems to happen every year - in some form or other. But clearly something is wrong when despite all the safeguards and background checks, extremely disturbed people can get access to firearms.

For some reason I can never get Prince Philip's diatribe after Dunblane out of my mind. Its just crackers...

Clearly there is an issue with 'availability' but doubtless other factors are at work too. Simply it seems that there are a lot of disturbed people about - but I seriously wonder what sorts of social / family backgrounds generate this kind of pyschology. To digress slightly - do you remember the kid who committed suicide by flying a plane into a building in some sort of copycat 9/11? I can't even think of a UK/European parallel to that - its just very weird.

I mean killing yourself is one thing - but I can't fathom why someone has to do it in a way that causes mass death and destruction.

with the doors locked, i'd not bet that he would not have been as successful. he had time.

Probably because he is a coward. With a couple of pistols even Mr Bean is Rambo.

It is rather difficult to ambush someone who is armed when you are not.

In this case, it is the solution.

If you have one shooter that goes on a rampage in a school, 31 people die, and many more are injured. You have a shooter go on a rampage in a bank, maybe 5 people die. Why? Because there's usually someone with a gun that is going to shoot back at the shooter on the rampage already present or within a very fast response time.

Had there been an armed person in one of the classrooms, perhaps they could've stopped the rampage more quickly.

Nope. Special OPs need no bullets to defend themselves.

I deranged man was the cause of the deaths. Not an inanimate object.

The cops with the guns just stood outside until he killed himself. If a student had a gun it might have been different.

Stands to reason, though, that more incidents (with fewer per incident casualties, perhaps) causing overall more casualties would be likely if more snapping students would be carrying firearms on campus. The more people carry guns, the more incidents with firearms there will be. That ain't rocket science.

And those Special Ops types also have respawn points inside the Fortress of Doom, right, and level up? ;)

Think about it, wannabe Jack Bauers. Suppose concealed carry is allowed on campus. Usually, to apply for concealed carry, you have to be a resident of the state and above a certain age, and often you have to already own the gun; you apply for a permit to carry this particular weapon. So most of the students, young undergraduates, many from out of state, wouldn't have been able to be armed anyway.

Then you have to take into account the likelihood that the students have their guns with them at a 9am exam, that those who do so aren't women with the gun-holding purses out of reach, that the person is a good enough shot, that the hero doesn't get mistaken for a criminal, too.

Oh, you say. The answer is even *more* guns. No restrictions at all! Then everyone can be a cowboy and there will be even more guns. And then, I ask you, think about all the frat parties, broken hearts, bouts of depression, drunkenness, and general stupidity of the typical undergraduate. Now, there's no licensing. There's about 10-20 college kid deaths nationwide every year from random violence.

So, let's say we let all the undergrads have guns. Maybe you get lucky and some 18-year-old gets to prevent a mass murder. There's about one every seven years or so. Since 1966, there's been what, about 60 deaths in mass college-related killings? But I guarantee that you'll add one or two deaths, every year, from some drunken guy shooting his lover in a rage, or someone killing their roommate and themselves, or an accident after a party.

I'm generally anti-gun-restriction. And there's good arguments for concealed carry, but honestly, this ain't one of them anywhere outside a hero fantasy. There were heroes who saved lives yesterday -- one girl who helped barricade a classroom door while shot in the hand -- a prof who held the doors shut while his students ran out the other exit. He's one of the dead. It didn't look like a fantasy, and their bravery doesn't need to be cheapened.

And just in a side note..... do you think any of these students can now identify with what it's like to try to go to school in Baghdad?

Oh god. We have an inkling of an idea that might turn into a clue if we marinate it in clue sauce. Consider, what, 25 million people in Iraq, about 30-50 lives lost per day by the most conservative estimates; multiply that by 12 to get the number of people in the U.S., so, what, let's call it 500 violent deaths per day for the U.S.

Would we be arguing at that point that the newspapers weren't reporting the good news?

Not EVERY Freshman would have a gun. Only people that met the requirements for concealed carry. OMG EVERY FRESHMAN WILL HAVE A GUN RUN!!!!!!!! enough with that propaganda.
