I was able to visit her, luckily.

The sad thing is when she came (the one time after we married) to visit me for 3 weeks she was literally harassed by border control, called an idiot, insulted etc...

Meanwhile I walk through the electronic passport machines at UK immigration like in a citizen. The last time I spoke to anyone was 2 years ago.

Eventually that will change in Europe and with Brexit I would expect the UK to be much tougher on border control. If France doesn't take control it will lose it's identity, Paris is a mess with a lot of locals moving out of the city because parts of it are a no go area. I want to move to the US and eventually get citizenship so I am all in favor of a tough but fair immigration system.

My wife being a US citizen was able to travel to Ireland and stay with very few issues, eventually getting her dual citizenship but since then the Irish system has got tougher and longer.

I want to believe that. But comments like the previous one are just designed to provoque and not contribute, in my opinion. Hence my observation, I could we wrong of course.

And no, you've never been offensive to me directly, just as I wasn't trying to be disrespectful to you, just making an observation.

* Regarding my comment, It wasn't directed to anyone in particular, sorry if you felt personally offended by it. I did say that and I stand by it, but people change.  It is taking all my strength and understanding to grasp why anyone would still stand by a man that has been openly disastrous in many ways. Not even mentioning what the media says, (I agree there is a lot of sensationalism)  I'm not biased by it, I'm making a judgment solely based on what he says. Even then I've always been open to learning more about what he is trying to do to make America great again.

The experience is vastly different for me than it is for you. I am not a rapist, murderer or bad hombre, and I refuse to be painted at such, but that is what Trump has done since the beginning of his campaign. He reduced my whole country to a series of stereotypes (violent, lazy, poor, uneducated, the drug war) which does personally affect me. Of course we are not perfect, and I understand that many have illegally crossed the border which I've never supported, but we are not all the same.  It's been proven that most of the ilegal immigrants are coming from central/south America but to him, everything south is ''Mexico'' and our problem. Which is just partially true.

A lot of us are following the rules, filing the same fees, apart from our families just like the rest. And we still get treated like common criminals.

I hope you understand why people are being affected by him even if it's just indirectly, although it doesn't apply to you, it applies to others.

So you have zero respect for me....yet you want me to be polite?  Sorry, that's not how I roll. I treat others the same way they treat me.

i have no idea how you get treated. Whether it is real or imagined....I have no clue. I never treat hispanics poorly and always treat them as citizens. Sometimes they say....no English...and I suspect they are illegals....but it doesn't really matter. My problem is with the us government allowing them to come in the first place and not removing them asap. The wall should have been built 25 years ago. Even the great Ronald Reagan kicked the Can down the road creating the mess we are in today.

Even mexico has a wall/fence along it southern border.

The time has arrived where the us is going to crack down on illegals. Sure some people are going to be upset, worried etc....and many will be deported. It is for the greater good of our country and it must be done. In the long run this is the only way to stop the discrimination you speak of.

It's very easy to be jealous of those that get put in one of the quicker centers and not the sinkhole that is Nebraska. The current system favors those who enter on a holiday visa and file for adjustment of status, most are doing it to beat the system. So I would be resentful to anyone that tries take a shortcut or enters illegally.

I agree, and while they're trying to cheat the system which isn't right, the problem lies partially in the system itself. I know it's not as easy as saying ''let's just make AOS inside the U.S with the use of a tourist VISA, ilegal'' but maybe they could wait longer while those of us that are actually doing it through the proper channels and have to wait 12-14 months and more away from our loved ones gets processed first, make it a bit more fair? knowing that you not only get to go through it faster but in the company of your loved ones, even if it's a grey area or downright fraud,  makes it very tempting if you ask me. I can understand why people take that risk.

Hey I'm not from Mexico OR the UK OR Germany or anywhere else mentioned here and the first time I visited with my now wife, I overstayed my visa

Long story short(kinda) - I asked for an extension, and was dumb, modest, or both...instead of the additional 6 months I could have easily asked for and likely would have been approved I only asked for 4. That was when she had her surgery and I stayed with her. I don't even remember all the exact circumstances as it was 9 years ago, but I ended up leaving about 4 months and 3 weeks or so later, which would have been fine had I only thought to ask for 6 months but since it was 4 months it was an overstay. Originally we planned for me to go back on a tourist visa several months later, but, I had to go to the embassy first to get a new visa since an overstay null and voids your old one. Now, I do know there are many people who just come back in with no issues since alot of times they're not even really aware that you overstayed, and think your visa is valid but didn't want to take that chance. The funny thing is when I went to my interview at the embassy even the first officer I spoke with tried to convince me I had a valid visa already and I was the one trying to explain I can't use it because I overstayed. He ended up talking to someone else who explained it to him I guess and then came back and put a big black "cancelled without prejudice" stamp over it and sent me back home with no visa at all because I wasn't back for long enough.

Wasn't easy news to tell my wife but you make mistakes you face the consequences. That's part of why she ended up moving there with me, there were about 11 months inbetween me leaving Milwaukee and her moving to Israel, during that time she came over to visit 2 times before the 3rd time was to stay. Then in 2012 we decided to start the IR-1 process and the rest is history. BTW I've always told her I personally wouldn't have an issue being stopped in the street and asked to show proof I belong here, just not something that would bother me personally although I can see why it would bother some people. I gave an example in the past about  this woman who rear ended me - if I wanted to be mean and prejudicial I could have probably made sure to find out if she was legal or not but honestly I couldn't care less, it's not my job.

France[edit]

An early usage of the term regarding Europe was in a 2002 opinion piece by David Ignatius in The New York Times, where he wrote about France, "Arab (sic) gangs regularly vandalize synagogues here, the North African suburbs have become no-go zones at night, and the French continue to shrug their shoulders."[21] La Courneuve, a other district in the Paris region, was described by police as a no-go zone.[22]

In 2010, Raphaël Stainville of French newspaper Le Figaro called certain neighborhoods of the southern city Perpignan "veritable lawless zones", saying they had become too dangerous to travel in at night. He added that the same was true in parts of Béziers and Nîmes.[23] In 2012, Gilles Demailly (fr), the mayor of the French city Amiens, in the wake of several riots, called the northern part of his city a lawless zone, where one could no longer order a pizza or call for a doctor.[24] In 2014, Fabrice Balanche, a scholar of the Middle East, labelled the northern city of Roubaix, as well as parts of Marseille, "mini-Islamic states", saying that the authority of the state is completely absent there.[25] American magazines Newsweek[26] and The New Republic[27] have also used the term to describe parts of France.

In January 2015, after the Charlie Hebdo shooting in Paris, various American media, including the news cable channels Fox News and CNN, described the existence of no-go zones across Europe and in France in particular, or featured guests that referred to them. In some cases, the French areas termed "sensitive urban zones"[28] were described as no-go zones.[29][30] Both networks were criticized for these statements,[31] and anchors on both networks later apologized for the characterizations.[32][33][34][35] The mayor of Paris, Anne Hidalgo, said that she intended to sue Fox News for its statements.[36][needs update]

You can keep Wiki I would rather go on my own personal experience.

There are plenty of videos on YouTube and you can see police trying to enter in to some areas but getting beaten back. Also plenty of vlogs from visitors giving their experience.

I am really confused, how did I disrespect you? I've been nothing but polite to you. The only thing I did was question the tone of some of your comments, even saying that of course I could be wrong about my opinion because it is just that, an opinion that you can take or leave. Your overreaction is more a reflection of how you feel, rather what I actually said or meant. You can treat me however you like, i will continue to be courteous. But that doesn't mean I won't disagree with you, and it is not personal.

I've never said that we shouldn't have borders, or that I support ilegal immigration. What does the fence along the southern border has to do with what we are discussing here? Nothing in my comments reflect that, in any way.

You are clearly resentful when it comes to certain aspects of immigration and I get that. But I am not the enemy here.

I wish you the best.

You said you have no respect for anyone who voted for Trump. I voted for Trump.....so I assume I would be included in that group. This could be where the communication problem is?

But no worries. I think you are a good person and have been very respectful to me and everyone else.  I don't consider you an enemy by any stretch of the imagination.

I was was just pointing out that things go both ways.

I agree with you for the most part on illegal immigration.

I am resentful about our politicians. They could have fixed this problem years ago.....but I guess special interests giving them money causes them to look the other way.

Indeed. While GWB kept preaching about a wall, he was all for another round of amnesty and pro-illegal immigration. Just about everything with that guy was fake, from him being an alleged "compassionate conservative", to a "fiscal conservative", to a "diplomat", down to his New England Yale and Harvard style southern accent.. all phony.

We should ideally be working together as a team to stop ilegal immigration and drug trafficking

There used to be "Class B" border-crossings in several places along the Tex-Mex border.

They were footbridges across the Rio Grande where it was legal to cross to Mexico, but not to re-enter Texas without CBP inspection.

Families on both sides would hand groceries and gifts across to each other.  Commerce on a small scale was conducted.

People looked out for suspicious parties and activities in a "neighborhood watch" type of way.

A few years ago, these footbridges were removed by CBP because of "furtherance," whatever that really means or meant.

Small businesses on the Mexican side failed, because they could no longer receive gifts of products to sell.

The families on the Mexican side became isolated, and many moved away.

In some instances, the narcos and malos moved in.

The only "Class B" port existing now, to my knowledge, is at Boquillas del Carmen.

It was opened only a few years ago, when all sides miraculously dropped their swords and cooperated.

A CBP station, open certain hours from Wednesdays to Sundays, is overseen remotely from El Paso.

The previously struggling residents of Boquillas now have gringo tourists again.

Houses are being built, and abandoned ones restored.

The population is increasing.

Everyone on both sides of the river is happy.

Both sides of the river are completely safe.

An object lesson is in here somewhere.

Well of course they don't have to answer. They also shouldn't even be asked.

For all the talk of California being a bastion of liberal illegal protection, in San Diego cops definitely ask "Mexican-looking" people for their papers without proper cause. This was happening before Trump. I can't imagine it has gotten any better.

My wife being a US citizen was able to travel to Ireland and stay with very few issues, eventually getting her dual citizenship but since then the Irish system has got tougher and longer.

I haven't gone that far yet. A few years ago the UK set up their "Registered Traveller" Program, which you can join if you visit around 4 times in a year (I think? Maybe more). Once you apply, pay a 100 dollar (approx) fee, you just have to go through the regular border control once, explain to the officer why you visit so frequently, and then after that you can use the electronic processing machines. The UK officer in question didn't care one bit that I was married to a UK citizen. If anything, that gave me a more valid reason to enter the country. When my wife came to visit here she said she was married to a US Citizen and that was literally all it took for border control to look at her with evil suspicion as if she was a drug smuggler. She was literally not allowed to say anything else, she was taken to a windowless room (I was with her, we were seperated) and then she (and I) were both grilled individually.

Entering the UK for me is literally faster then returning to the US as a US Citizen. I've don't think I've ever waited more than 5 minutes in a queue at Heathrow. JFK and IAH both have horrible immigration queues (I need to get global reentry, I even can get it paid for with my credit card... just lazy).
