Well my smoke detector decided to let me know it needed a new battery about 30 minutes ago, at 5:30am.  I'm unable to change it because a) I live in an apartment and don't have a ladder, and b) I'm worried if I mess with it the alarm will go off for the entire building.

 

As I write this I think it may have stopped beeping... knock on wood!  Might try to get another hour of sleep before going to the gym.

I think these alarms are specifically programmed to only go off in the middle of the night to let you know that it's out of batteries...
