Can do 18k and put the rest into other savings or towards buying a retirement house somewhere warmer.    I suspect any job I find up here isn't going to have a particularly impressive salary - I doubt I'd make more than my husband, but without a degree, I'd be relegated to retail.  Such is life for women.

Nope, which is why I suspect my prospects are low.  I haven't worked since I was 20.

 

I might or might not do my master's if they offer me a TA-ship.  I'm certainly not paying for it. That might increase the chances.  

 

The job market here functions a little bit differently than New York or most places.  I have no doubts on my ability to earn at least 50k at one of the nearby companies and actually be employed.  Most women around here don't work until their mid-30s.

Things have changed. 

You've gotta have a skill or something. 

Something that employers really need.

Just got word that my wife's friend who is from Venezuela lost her mother to cancer. It's a bummer. Her mother was only diagnosed like 3 weeks ago but the cancer was spreading so rapidly that they couldn't even get her into treatment. Under the count your blessings umbrella, my own older sister just kicked her ovarian cancer into remission after 6 months of chemo. It was big news last weekend and we were all really happy about it. That statistics on ovarian cancer aren't good so we are extra happy at this point and hope it stays in remission for many years if not forever. I like how my brother puts it in a macabre way... "what we really hope for is that she dies from something unrelated to cancer."

Oh no, my thoughts are with her and her family. 

 

Yay for your sister. Welllets hope it's old age that gets her and not crossing the street.

Me too.  I was doing some reading about it and 5000 people died exactly 32 years in Mexico City from an earthquake.
