This is just he's applied for them here too but never made it to interviews. He is liking the idea of weekends off and all holidays too.

He probably won't appreciate the defined benefit pension plan as much as he should. As a parent you really need to emphasize it. I see lots of young people here at the State of NM who work for 1 or 2 or 3 years and don't give a thought to the pension and quit before the pension vests. Generally, once a person reaches around 35 they begin to understand the concept of providing for their retirement.

Oh no! What is she going to do?

She has a week to decide.

Me, I want her to go to Manhattan.

That's the world she'll see out there.

And this school is so well funded, that we don't do/ buy anything. They provide everything, even clothing.

Just got word that my wife's friend who is from Venezuela lost her mother to cancer. It's a bummer. Her mother was only diagnosed like 3 weeks ago but the cancer was spreading so rapidly that they couldn't even get her into treatment. I am hoping that she's already received her Advanced Parole so that she can go back and visit her family for the memorial. She was fortunate that her mother was able to visit the US for several months earlier this year. But still...

Under the count your blessings umbrella, my own older sister just kicked her ovarian cancer into remission after 6 months of chemo. It was big news last weekend and we were all really happy about it. That statistics on ovarian cancer aren't good so we are extra happy at this point and hope it stays in remission for many years if not forever. I like how my brother puts it in a macabre way... "what we really hope for is that she dies from something unrelated to cancer."

It didn't feel right to 'like' this post but I love the way your brother puts it :)

Good luck making the best choice to Mini Sat, it's hard when you have the ambition but there's only so many hours in a day...

Everything crossed for a smooth and stress free journey

I'm panicking at 30 because I don't have enough saved for retirement.  I'm counting down the years I can go back to work to just up my social security amount and put all the extra into retirement savings.

Trophie...

30 is not too old to start funding your retirement.

I started paying into social security when I was 17.

I started a 401 when I was 28.

It started at 2%. And stayed like that till I was like 40. (By that time, my FICA was maxed out).

But I gotta say. I did everything else right...

Well, except that it well be more like 35 by the time the youngest heads off to pre-K, and then even later if there is another.  It is one the things that would hold me back from having a 4th kid.

Well if you get a great job and have a nice 15 year run...

I think we are probably unique in that we don't need a second salary, so technically I could put almost all of it into retirement savings.  We'll see how that goes, though.

That earthquake damage in Mexico City is not looking good.
