Buying a generator was one of the first things we did when we bought a house.  The previous owners had the foresight to put in a proper hookup for it.

 

We've only needed to use it once, but it really could be a lifesaver here in winter to run the blower on the furnace.

My house has a back up generator. I really should fire it up lol.

It hasn't ran in 12 years.

In fact it was never tested...

I'd love solar panels, but my understanding is that they are not the best investment where I live.  They are also still just so hugely expensive for what you'd practically need long term.

 

I'm maybe kind of weird, but I have this idea that I like to be prepared - makes me not stress about things.

I looked into it. A couple of my guys have it. 

The technology is still unfolding. 

One of them swears that he doesn't have to pay a dime in electricity. And gets money back from con ed.

I did have a solar charger powering the little fan on Turtle's stroller in Disney.

That McLaren worked great btw. Except we hung a knapsack and a cooler bag on it. Every time turtle got up, the stroller fell back...

But man is that little fan awesome!

We live on the mountain so some degree of preparedness is a part of everyday life. Solar panels are expensive but we get lots of sunshine and are not planning on using the power for anything except backup, unless of course they generate more power than we can store.

In theory if we put enough in we would generate enough for our use plus storage but we aren't ever planning on selling surplus back to the grid.

 

Sister & brother in law are packing up and getting out tomorrow so they can avoid the storm, I hate their visit has been cut short but it's their home, they need to keep it safe.

MIL has been watching the talking heads on the weather channel all day.  She's really annoyed that they can't say where Irma is going. Like really annoyed. She doesn't often swear, but boy it turns out she sure knows how

 

Not seen any pictures out of Grand Turk yet, I don't know how I think there could be, with communication down. Still.

Mrs. T-B. ran across a guy who lost everything in his casa, sigh man.

She donated our Many-piece sectional sofa, a huge carpet, and a rolling coffeetable to him, donate man.

She has plans to redo our downstairs anyway, sigh man.

 

The boon, see man:  Under the sofa were at least Many (two Manyzen) wrappers and cat toys, bonanza for miu man.

Amazing what cat had knocked under there, energetic miu man.

Among the above rediscoveries was the fuzzy asteroid-type ball that seems to be cat's favorite, si miu man.

It was vigorously played with, we and miu man.
